Fate of 460,000 students uncertain amid 2024 WASSCE for School results release delay
The fate of over 40,000 second-cycle school students who sat for the 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) remains uncertain as a technical hitch faced by WAEC has delayed the release of the WASSCE results.
In a statement, sighted by GhanaEdcuation.org, the management of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) said the issue had to do with a breakdown of the scanners used to process the objective cards.
The Head of Public Affairs of WAEC, John Kapi, said his outfit is awaiting the release of additional funds from an outstanding balance of GH¢118 million from the Ministry of Education to complete the scanning process.

The delay in releasing the 2024 WASSCE for School results consequently has caused anxiety among parents as the West African Senior School Certificate Examination results are crucial for students to gain admission to tertiary institutions.
Meanwhile, WAEC has urged members of the public to ignore any information circulating on social media about the release date of the results, as it will release the results as soon as the technical challenges are resolved.
The 2024 edition of the Ghana-only West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) was administered to 460,611 candidates, representing 247,657 females and 212,954 males from 1,003 schools.

The examination started on Monday, August 5, this year with the administration of Visual Arts Project Work, which ended on Friday, September 20, 2024.
In an earlier statement, the not-for-profit organization said it had identified several infractions in the 2024 examination. The infractions WAEC, in a blog post said involved supervisors, invigilators, and candidates.
The infractions included the photocopying and distribution of answers to candidates, the smuggling of mobile phones into the examination halls by both candidates and teachers, and the concealment of foreign materials by candidates during the exam.

“The Council will take appropriate action to ensure that all examination officials and stakeholders who were found culpable are sanctioned in accordance with the appropriate provisions of the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the examination,” WAEC said.
This year marks the third successive time Ghanaian candidates have sat the WASSCE for School without other member counties of WAEC because the other four member countries—Nigeria, Liberia, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia—have returned to the May/June calendar for WASSCE school candidates.
