Female Robber Leads robbery Gang on Rampage in Somanya: Shoots Three, Robs Fuel Station and Mobile Money Vendor
Somanya, a quiet town in the Eastern Region, has been rattled by yet another alarming armed robbery incident, marking the second such occurrence in just 12 days. On the evening of Monday, October 23, 2023, between 6:30 and 7:00 pm, a gang of four robbers, including a female member, unleashed a brazen and audacious act of robbery. Their targets were the Gaso Filling Station and a nearby mobile money vendor located in Ogome, a Somanya suburb.
This shocking incident bears an eerie resemblance to the previous armed robbery on October 11, 2023, when a gang of eight robbers, including another female member, targeted the SP Gas filling station, situated less than 200 meters away from the Gaso filling station.
The armed robbers, equipped with pump-action guns, left a trail of fear in their wake. The female member of the gang, in a display of sheer audacity, opened fire, shooting sporadically into the air. Their criminal exploits included robbing the fuel station of an undisclosed sum of money, leaving both staff and customers traumatized.
A nearby mobile money operator also fell victim to the criminals, suffering a significant loss of over twenty-eight thousand Cedis (GHC 28,000).
The brazen act led to violence, as an attendant of the filling station and two other eyewitnesses were shot during the robbery. Two of the victims had to be admitted to the Yilo Krobo Municipal Hospital, while the third received treatment and was subsequently discharged at the Somanya Polyclinic.
Following their criminal act, the robbers fled into nearby thickets, making their escape before the arrival of the Somanya Police. Though the police initiated a pursuit, it proved unsuccessful.
Notably, the police had earlier issued directives to major businesses, urging them to close their establishments by 8 pm in a bid to prevent further incidents. Unfortunately, these directives are not being adhered to by local businesses.
The police have now commenced an intensive investigation into this latest incident, as the community grapples with a heightened sense of insecurity and fear due to these recurring armed robberies.
