First African UN General Secretary – Boutros Boutros Ghali
Boutros Boutros Ghali was the sixth UN general secretary and the first African to hold an office as the United Nations UN general secretary.
Boutros Boutros Ghali was born on November 22, 1922, in Egypt.
He started his basic education in Cairo, Egypt, and was admitted to the University of Cairo for his first degree in political science.
He furthered his studies at Paris University, where he received his PhD in international law in 1949.
He practiced law for a couple of years before he fully joined politics.
He became the Minister of State for the Egypt Foreign Affairs Department, and with his positive response to his task, he was able to promote domestic and international peace due to his position.
He became a member of the Egyptian parliament in 1987 and was also a member of the Democratic Party.
Before joining the UNO, he was the assistant chairman for Socialist International.
As an author, he has published a couple of articles that deal with international law, diplomacy, and political science.
Boutros Boutros was a diplomat and supporter of international peace and cooperation, which helped him be elected as the Sixth General Secretary of the UN.
The Secretariat organ of the UN administers programmes and policies laid down by the Executive Council.
The Secretary General works with members of the security council to identify potential problem areas and help implement the wishes of the council.
Boutros Boutros Ghali served as the UN general secretary from 1991–1996.
During his period as UN general secretary,he showed massive support and response to the Rwandan Brutal Genocide and the Congo War.
He also played a significant role in establishing the International Criminal Tribunal, which aimed at prosecuting people who committed crimes during the Bosinian War.
He created a peaceful atmosphere in Haiti, which he made possible by ensuring good democratic governance in the country.
During the Israelite and Palestinian wars, he set up a commission to restore peace among the countries.
