Five Programmes Most Students Offer At The Senior High Schools In Ghana

There are several programmes being offered at the Senior High Schools in Ghana. Each programme has its own career for its student. Each student is given the opportunity to select one programme that best suite his or her abilities to pursue at the SHS and eventually at the tertiary level.

1. General Arts
Undoubtedly the most ‘populated program’ in the senior high schools in Ghana is the General Arts programme. Most students prefer this program because of its popularity. Courses offered in this program may include Government, CRS, French, Geography, Elective Maths and many more
2. Business
This is the second most popular program in the senior high schools and also the number one program at the tertiary level. Courses offered in this program may include, Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Business Management, Elective Mathematics and Economics.
3. General Science
One of the most popular programs in the senior high schools is the General Science programme. General Science Programme is a designed programme that involves the study of the natural phenomenon through a systematic approach of science: hypothesis, experiments, observation, and arriving at some logical conclusions. General Science as a programme also involves the study and application of technology (ICT in general).
Depending on each school’s capacity, various combinations of the elective subjects are made for students grouped into various classes. For example, in some schools, Geography is part of General Science electives.
4. Home Economics
SHS Home Economics Programme is a designed programme that involves the study of Cooking , Child Development ,
Education and Community Awareness, Home Management and Design , Sewing and Textiles , Budgeting and Economics , Health and Hygiene.
Home Economics as a programme also involves the study and application of technology (ICT in general) and Physical Education (PE).
Common courses of study in a family and consumer sciences program, also referred to as home economics, include family finance, textiles, wellness, food science and nutrition.
5. Visual Arts
This is a very practical program and it is very entertaining. You should give your ward a chance to pursue this program.
Visual Arts Programme is a designed programme that involves the study of ceramics, drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, design, crafts, photography, video, film making, architecture etc.
Visual Arts as a programme also involves the study and application of technology (ICT in general) and Physical Education (PE).
Depending on each school’s capacity, various combinations of the elective subjects are made for students grouped into various classes. For example, in some schools, Also included within the visual arts are the applied arts such as industrial design, graphic design, fashion design, interior design and decorative art.
