French Ambassador Hostage Crisis in Niger: Macron’s Concerns

The situation in Niger has taken a concerning turn, with French Ambassador Sylvain Itte being held hostage by the military junta that seized power in the West African nation. President Emmanuel Macron made this alarming announcement, shedding light on the increasingly tense diplomatic standoff.

President Macron disclosed during a visit to Burgundy that not only is Ambassador Itte being held hostage but also diplomatic staff within the French embassy are facing restrictions, preventing them from receiving essential supplies, including food. He emphasized the gravity of the situation by mentioning that they are compelled to consume military rations.

The turmoil began when Niger’s military leaders, following the overthrow of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, demanded Ambassador Itte’s departure from the country. However, the French government opted not to comply with this ultimatum, nor did they acknowledge the legitimacy of the military regime.
