Gabon Opposition candidate claims ‘victory’ in Presidential Elections, renews call for Ali Bongo to concede defeat
The Opposition candidate in the 2023 Gabon presidential elections claims ‘victory’, and renews the call for Ali Bongo the current president to concede defeat.
Albert Ondo Ossa remains President Ali Bongo Ondimba’s main rival in Saturday’s election held in Gabon to elect a new leader for the country.
Although the electoral commission has not declared the official results and winner of the Presidential race, Albert Ondo Ossa has stated that he has won the election and has also called on the President to “Organize the transfer of power” peacefully.
- Albert Ondo Ossa, the main opposition candidate in the Gabonese presidential election, has alleged fraud by the incumbent president, Ali Bongo Ondimba.
- Ondo Ossa’s campaign manager, Mike Jocktane, has called on Bongo to “bow humbly before the will of the Gabonese people” and concede defeat.
- Jocktane also said that Ondo Ossa has won the election, based on a “trend” of votes that have been counted so far. However, Gabonese law prohibits the media from reporting any unofficial results.
- The Gabonese Elections Center (CGE) has not yet released any official results and has refused to give any indication of when they will be announced.
- The government has suspended internet access in the country and declared a curfew, citing the risk of violence after Ondo Ossa’s claims of victory.
- Internet access was still not restored on Monday evening, and the army and police have set up roadblocks throughout the capital to enforce the curfew.
