GES Clarifies Salary Adjustment for Newly Promoted Teachers, Says No Application Is Required

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has clarified the process for salary adjustments for newly promoted teachers, assuring affected teachers that they do not need to submit separate application letters or other documents to have their salaries adjusted to reflect their new ranks.

The clarification follows concerns from some newly promoted teachers who had reportedly been directed to submit application letters together with their promotion letters and other documents for the processing of their salary adjustments.

In an immediate release dated 22nd August 2026, the GES, through its Public Relations Unit, stated that the existing arrangement for newly promoted teachers remains unchanged.

According to the GES, teachers who are promoted to new ranks are normally placed automatically on the appropriate salary scale to reflect their new ranks. The Service therefore indicated that there has been no change to this established practice.

The GES further advised newly promoted teachers not to submit applications or other documents for salary adjustments in response to requests of this nature.

“Teachers are, therefore, to ignore the request to submit any documents for salary adjustments.”

The statement was signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations at the Ghana Education Service, and was issued in response to concerns reaching the management of the Service.

The clarification is particularly important for teachers who may have been uncertain about whether additional documentation was required after receiving their promotion letters. The GES position is that the salary adjustment should follow the promotion process automatically, rather than requiring individual applications from teachers.

Promotion letters and salary placement

A separate update circulating on the 2026 GES promotion process indicates that promotion letters for successful teachers were expected to be dispatched to Regional Directorates from 15th August 2026, while qualified teachers were expected to be placed on the appropriate salary scales by 31st August 2026.

The update applies to teachers who successfully passed the recent promotion examination.

The salary placement information is significant because newly promoted teachers will be looking forward to having their remuneration reflect their newly attained ranks. However, the latest GES clarification makes it clear that teachers should not be required to initiate a separate salary-adjustment application process.

The Service also acknowledged that reports of such requests had emerged from a few regions and districts.

The GES said management is engaging the affected regions and districts and called for calm among teachers while the matter is addressed.

This means teachers who have already been promoted should exercise caution before submitting personal documents or paying anyone to process a salary adjustment on their behalf based on unofficial instructions.

What newly promoted teachers should do

For teachers affected by the promotion exercise, the key message from the GES is straightforward: the salary adjustment process is automatic under the existing arrangement.

Teachers should therefore keep their promotion documentation safely and follow official communication from the Ghana Education Service and the relevant Regional or District Education Directorate.

Where a teacher receives an instruction that appears to contradict the latest GES directive, it is advisable to seek clarification through the appropriate official GES channel before submitting documents.

The development should provide some relief to newly promoted teachers who were concerned that they might have to go through an additional application process before their salaries could be adjusted.

The GES has also urged teachers to remain calm as management works with the regions and districts where such requests were reportedly being made.
