The Ghana Education Service has indicated that the reports indicating it was going to reduce the 2024 BECE subjects from 9 to 5 are all false.
However, the issue of whether the 2024 BECE will be merged or reduced to five subjects surfaced in the public domain after an interview was granted by Mr. Prince Charles Agyemang-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division of the Ghana Education Service. He disclosed that the goal of the change was to make the learning and examination environments more focused and relevant for pupils.

In that same interview, he explained that the previous nine subjects were considered excessive, according to Agyemang-Duah, and some of them seemed repetitious and redundant. Consequently, “Our World, Our People” is no longer included in the course requirements.
While debunking the information as false, the GES also failed to dissociate itself from the comments made by the Director of the Schools and Instructions Division of the Ghana Education Service, which set the tone for the 9–5 subjects BECE debate.
It will be prudent for the GES to come out clearly on this issue as to whether the students preparing for the 2024 BECE will be writing nine subjects and whether it is considering the merging of subjects for the BECE.
The general public has also called on the GES to be responsive when it comes to communication. The issue regarding the merging and/or reducing of the subjects from 9 to 5 has been in the news for over two months; however, the GES only came out to debunk the viral image making rounds on January 6, 2024.
“You guys should be responsive and on top of the issue; this message has been in circulation for more than two months. Surprised, you are now responding to it.” A comment left on the GES Facebook page read:
