GES Marks 2025 International Day of Mathematics

The Ghana Education Service (GES) joined the world to mark the 2025 International Day of Mathematics with a colourful and inspiring event. The celebration took place at Adisadel College.
The International Day of Mathematics was held on March 14th, 2025, by the Ghana Education Service (GES) in collaboration with the African Institute of Mathematical Sciences Ghana (AIMS Ghana) and the Practical Education Network.
The event brought together students, educators, and math enthusiasts to promote the importance of mathematics in our daily lives. Teachers and learners at all levels of education selected for the programme had the opportunity to exhibit teaching and learning materials prepared for the teaching and learning of mathematics.
At the event, learners at the pre-school, primary, junior high, and senior high levels had the chance to resolve and solve mathematics-related problems.
There was also a live Mathematics quiz for basic and senior high schools on the day as part of efforts to encourage the study of Mathematics at all levels of education, while also demystifying mathematics. Students who excelled in their respective Mathematics quizzes and projects were awarded as part of efforts to motivate and challenge them. Awards included Mathematics textbooks, learning materials, and many more.
Students selected from some public Senior High Schools also exhibited mathematics-related projects for all persons who graced the occasion.
The International Day of Mathematics, also known as Pi Day, is a worldwide celebration of mathematics. It was proclaimed by UNESCO’s 40th General Conference in November 2019 and first celebrated on March 14, 2020. The day aims to highlight the crucial role mathematics plays in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals and to strengthen education and training in mathematical sciences. It also seeks to improve equitable and gender-equal access while empowering young people and advancing their understanding of the discipline.

The theme for the 2025 International Day of Mathematics, “Mathematics for a Better World,” resonated throughout the event in Ghana. It underscored how mathematical sciences are essential for addressing challenges in areas such as artificial intelligence, climate change, energy, and sustainable development. By engaging students and educators in practical problem-solving and showcasing real-world applications of mathematics, the Ghana Education Service and its partners aimed to inspire a new generation of mathematicians and problem-solvers who can contribute to building a brighter future.
