GES to sanction Kade SHS students who beat teacher over strict WASSCE invigilation

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has pledged to sanction students of the Kade Senior High School in the Eastern Region who attacked and assaulted a teacher, Mr Michael Quayson, outside the school premises.
In a viral video circulating on various social media platforms, the past students of the school are seen beating the teacher, who they said was strict in his invigilation during the just-ended 2025 WASSCE for School.
According to GES, its preliminary report indicates the incident happened on 5th October 2025, where the aggrieved students assaulted the teacher allegedly because he was strict on them during the invigilation of the Christian Religious Studies WASSCE 2025 paper.
“The issue was not reported to the school authority nor GES Management until the video recording of the assault circulated on social media. Since then, Management has taken over the issue, and investigations are currently ongoing,” the Service stated in a statement sighted by GhanaEducation.org.
Condemning the assault, the Ghana Education Service (GES) described the students’ behaviour as unacceptable, unlawful, and a direct affront to the dignity of the teaching profession.
“The students shall face the appropriate sanctions provided by law and Ghana Education Service (GES) regulations to ensure justice is duly served.
Management assures all teachers nationwide of our full support in instilling discipline and ensuring examination integrity. We urge all students to uphold discipline and respect authority,” GES stated.
In a related development, the pre-tertiary teacher union, the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), has condemned the attack on the Kade SHS teacher who served as an invigilator during the 2025 WASSCE.
In an interview monitored by GhanaEducation.org, GNAT General Secretary Thomas Tanko Musah said the safety of teachers must be a top priority, advising teachers to remove themselves from any situation where they feel their lives are under threat.
“Teachers, wherever you are, if your life is threatened, you are allowed to leave. Just inform the appropriate persons and leave. The Labour Law allows that, and we urge our members to vacate the premises whenever they feel their lives are in danger,” he stated.
Thomas Tanko Musah also issued a warning to the presidential candidate of the People’s National Party (PNP), Janet Nabla, urging her to refrain from making comments he described as inflammatory against teachers following the mass failure recorded in the WASSCE.
“People like Janet Nabla must be careful with their statements and stop attacking teachers. If this continues, we will respond appropriately. It is wrong to incite the public against teachers. If you have nothing constructive to say, remain quiet and stop attacking teachers,” he cautioned.
