GES, UNESCO, and Beijing Normal University Host Girls in Tech Camp
As part of efforts to challenge girls and give them opportunities to venture in STEM and related fields, the Ghana Education Service, in collaboration with UNESCO and Beijing Normal University, organised a week-long Girls in Tech Camp from 13th to 17th April 2026 at the campus of Bagabaga College of Education in Tamale.
The camp aimed to highlight the importance of equipping girls with technological skills to become globally competitive.
Girls in Tech Camp Participants
Over sixty (60) girls, drawn from various schools including Northern School of Business, Tamale Senior High School, Tamale Girls Senior High School, Bagabaga College of Education Model School, and Danshele KG and Primary School, participated in a week of training, orientation, and practical sessions designed to enhance their digital and technological competencies.
Each day of the programme introduced new experiences aimed at expanding the participants’ understanding of opportunities within Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
A standout moment of the camp was a visit to Red Clay Studio, where the girls witnessed first-hand how creativity and innovation can be transformed into tangible outcomes. Throughout the week, participants also engaged with inspiring female mentors who shared personal experiences, offered guidance, and reinforced the message that their aspirations are both valid and achievable.
The Director-General, Prof. Kofi Davis, was represented by the Deputy Director-General (Quality and Access), Dr. Issahaque Munawaru, who encouraged the girls to take STEM education seriously and assured them of the Ghana Education Service’s continued support.

The Director of the Science Division, Mrs. Olicia Opare, reaffirmed efforts to make STEM- traditionally male-dominated- more inclusive and appealing to girls. The Northern Regional Director of Education, Mr. Alhassan Alidu Jnr., was also present to support the initiative.
Tamale Senior High School was recognised as the Overall Best School for its outstanding performance and commitment throughout the camp. Congratulations to Tamasco.

It is hoped that the 2026 Girls in Tech camp will create an enabling environment and motivate girls to show more interest in STEM. Future Girls in Tech camps also need to be expanded to give more girls the chance to participate.
