University students can now get (SLTF) student loans without a guarantor

It is official as university students can now get (SLTF) student loans without a guarantor.  The government of Ghana has passed into law the no guarantor policy with respect to university students accessing the Students’ Loan Trust Fund (SLTF) loans. This was made public by the Minister for Education, Dr. Adutwum as a follow-up to the KNUST students’ brouhaha.

Over the week, some 6000 students were nearly forced to defer their programmes over unpaid fees if not for the intervention of the KNUST SRC and other stakeholders.

Dr. Adutwum has directed students who however deferred their programmes as a result of funding issues to contact the Student Loan Trust Fund for support, since the no guarantor policy for securing a student loan from the trust has been approved by President Nana Addo.

The announcement by the minister regarding the student loans without a guarantor would go a long way to assist many students in tertiary institutions whose education is being threatened by funding issues.

Speaking about the “no guarantor loans for students”, the Minister of Education stated that, the policy will help students in various institutions of higher learning to easily acquire loans with no guarantor to fund their education.

With the passage of the much-awaited no guarantor students loan policy into law by president Nana Addo, students can now walk into the Student Loan Trust Fund offices on-campus and off-campus to complete their registration details for the education funding facility.

Speaking to stakeholders on the reasons why the Nana Addo-led government passed the “no guarantor policy for student loans”, the minister revealed that the policy was part of efforts by the government to improve access to education in the country.

This policy would ensure that graduates from Secondary schools who cannot access scholarships for their higher education can access such a facility upon gaining admission to help them finance their university education in any GTEC-approved tertiary institution which qualifies.
