The recent initiative by Margins Group, the producers of the Ghana Card, marks a significant step forward in addressing two pressing issues in Ghana: the troubling incidents of missing babies and the pervasive problem of age cheating, particularly in sports.

With the introduction of a policy to issue unique identification numbers to newborns, Ghana sets a precedent for leveraging technology and national identification systems to safeguard its citizens from birth.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s announcement of this policy heralds a new era in which every newborn in Ghana will be assigned a unique number immediately after birth, bridging the gap between birth and the age of fifteen when the individual becomes eligible for a Ghana Card.

This early assignment of a unique ID is a proactive measure to integrate every citizen into the national database from the very beginning of their life.

Deputy CEO of Margins Group, Kwesi Attah Baiden, underscored the significance of this development.

By linking a child’s details with those of their mother immediately after birth, the initiative aims to drastically reduce, if not eliminate, the phenomenon of missing babies in healthcare facilities.

This system ensures that every newborn is accounted for and securely linked to their biological parent, making any unauthorized attempt to take a baby from a healthcare facility easily traceable and preventable.

Furthermore, the unique ID system is designed to evolve with the child.

By the age of six, when a child’s biometrics are fully developed, they will be issued the Ghana Card, signifying their formal inclusion in the national identity registry.

This process, done in collaboration with the Ghana Health Service and other governmental agencies, ensures a seamless integration of health and identity records.

Beyond addressing child safety, Moses Baiden Jnr., the CEO of Margins Group, pointed out another critical benefit of this initiative: combating age fraud in sports.

The assignment of a unique ID at birth eliminates any ambiguity about an individual’s age, thereby curbing age cheating in football and other sports—a practice that has long plagued athletic integrity in Ghana and beyond.

The call for bipartisan support from Dr. Dominic Ayine, Chairman of the Subsidiary Legislation Committee, emphasizes the importance of this initiative not just as a technological or administrative measure, but as a national commitment to the wellbeing and security of every Ghanaian citizen.
