Ghanaian teachers employed by UK surpasses 10k in 2023 – MoE
The Minister of Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, has disclosed that Ghanaian teachers employed by the UK surpassed 10,000 as of 2023.
He made the revelation at the 2023 National Teachers Day celebration, which took place in Takoradi on October 5, 2023.
He added that the United Kingdom (UK) has in recent times declared its interest in employing more Ghanaian-trained educators.
Over 10,000 Ghanaian teachers have been employed to teach in the United Kingdom (UK), the Minister for Education, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, disclosed at the National Teachers Day celebration in Takoradi, in the Western Region.
The minister furthered that the United Kingdom’s minister in charge of education has informed Ghana of the intention to recruit more qualified teachers from Ghana.
At the 5th October celebration to award deserving teachers in Ghana, Hon. Yaw stated, “Ghana has more teachers than any country in Africa. Not long ago, I met the United Kingdom Minister for Education, and he is willing to recruit trained teachers from Ghana. We have more teachers unemployed”.
A cross-section of teachers have reacted to the above differently and have argued that the huge number of trained teachers leaving the profession entirely or relocating to other parts of the world in search of greener pastures is a result of the poor motivation and remuneration paid to teachers in Ghana.
They called on the Minister not to be overly excited about the brain drain in the education sector; instead, he should improve the incentives of Ghanaian teachers so that they can remain in Ghana and in the teaching profession to contribute to the development and training of the country’s human resources.

The government must not be excited with the over 10,000 teachers employed by the UK but should be alarmed to begin to take proactive steps to better the lot of teachers and make the education service and teaching attractive to current educations, those in training college, and all students in Ghana to prevent the exodus of talents and skilled professionals from the teaching field.
