Ghanaians Can Now Use Ghana Card As Passport In 44,000 Airports Globally
Ghanaians can now travel to 44,000 airports in the world with just the National Identity Card, also known as Ghana Card. This can serves as e-passport in these 44,000 airports.
This acknowledgment by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) enables the Ghana Card to be electronically read and verified at all ICAO-compliant international borders.
In a ceremony held at the International Civil Aviation Organization headquarters in Montreal, Canada, on February 9, 2022, Ghana was officially presented with a certificate, designating the Ghana Card as an e-passport accepted in 44,000 global airports. Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, Ransford Sowah, received the symbolic ‘key,’ signifying Ghana’s inclusion in the ICAO family.

This development allows the Ghana Card, a unique biometric identification card, to serve as an e-passport across 197 borders and in 44,000 airports worldwide. Holders of the Ghana Card can now board flights to Ghana by simply presenting the card.
Ghana attained official acceptance into the ICAO’s Public Key Directory (PKD) community on October 13, 2021, becoming the 79th member. The ICAO Public Key Directory acts as a central repository for exchanging information necessary to authenticate e-passports.
During the ceremony, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada, Mr. Ransford Sowah, accompanied by a delegation from Ghana, including Mr. Augustine Blay (Secretary to the Vice-President), Prof. Ken Attafuah (Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority), and other officials from the Presidency, received the symbolic key.
The delegation also included Richard Okyere-Fosu (Director-General of the National Information Technology Agency), Mr. Louis Kwame Obeng (Director of Passport), and Mr. Solomon Kofi Richardson (Head of Technical Services, NITA).

The Ghana Card, along with its upcoming biometric counterparts, is set to serve as official documentation in all 197 ICAO-compliant countries and 44,000 airports globally, facilitating travel to Ghana. The ICAO declaration aligns with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s announcement in November 2021, hinting at Ghanaians being able to return home using their Ghana cards.
Dr. Bawumia anticipated ICAO certification by the end of the first quarter of 2022, highlighting the Ghana Card’s role not only as a primary proof of identity but also as an e-passport for Ghanaian citizens by the same timeframe.
