1. 2022 National Science and Maths Quiz

In the week, the National Science and Maths Quiz got a  sad update as CHASS suspended SHSs from participating in the 2022 NSMQ  edition due to the delay in financial resources from the government for extracurricular activities. The 2022 NSMQ  edition may not be held.  This is the latests education news that made it to our Ghana’s Top Education News for the week.

 

2. Government’s Funding of 2022 WASSCE and BECE

Ghana’s Top Education News No. 2 is the government’s delay in making funds available for the conduct of BECE and WASSCE 2020 by WAEC.

The government of Ghana is yet to release funds for the conduct of the 2022 WASSCE, BECE per information released by WAEC. The government according to information available to Ghana Education was owing WAEC a total of GH₵ 15,790,072.00 for the conduct of the 2021 WASSCE and BECE. The school-leaving examination for Junior High and Senior High candidates in their WASSCE and BECE to be conducted in August and October respectively.

 

3. A teacher says Education Minister, Dr. Adutwum as a sign of hope for Education

A cross-section of teachers has described Education Minister Dr. Adutwum as a sign of hope after they compared his performance so far with the former Education Minister. One of the teachers took to social media to start a debate on the issue and wrote, “We thank President Nana Akufo-Addo for appointing Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum will be the new Minister in charge of Education. There will be hope again in the education sector”.

4. Free SHS under Review or Not Under Review Confusion

Over the week, the Director General of the GES, Dr. Prof Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa acclaimed while speaking on JoyNews Upfront programme that the Free SHS program was being reviewed to help the government to determine how much parents can pay. A press release from the GES later indicated their Free SHS was a policy of the government and that only the President of Ghana could initiate such as process. Reacting to the debate that the two contradictory statements generated, the Deputy Public Relations Officer (PRO) for the Ministry in charge of Education (MoE) Mr Yaw Opoku Mensah fired down the statements made by the GES boss and emphatically debunked allegations from the GES leadership that the (GES) was reviewing the popular Free SHS policy. 5. 2022 WASSCE and matters arising

Ghana will be the only country to write the August-September 2022 WASSCE for school candidates. This is because the country is yet to get back to the usual academic calendar, which starts in September each year. Nigeria and other members of the WAEC will write their papers ahead of Ghana. 6. Second Term Vacation Date Update From GES

The Ghana Education Service reacted to the possibility of an extension in the term due to the 10-day COLA strike which started on 4th July until 14th July 2022. In a Facebook page notice, the GES indicated that the academic calendar released in March has been maintained. READ: GES confirms term 2 vacation date for public schools

 

7. Teachers return to work after COLA strike

The final news that made it to Ghana’s Top 7 Education News  Headlines (July 18-24, 2022) is the calling off of the COLA strike and GES’ order for teachers to return to the classroom on 18th July.

Teachers and non-teaching staff of the GES officially returned to the classroom on 18th July after 10 days of COLA strike The 20% COLA demanded by teachers and other public sector workers was approved, however government and organized labour agreed on 15% COLA to be paid effective 1st July 2022.
