Govt approves 15% COLA and 15% Gov’t fees and charges
Ghanaians are not out of the woods yet after the government approved a 15% Cost of Living Allowance for public sector workers because the government has also through parliament approved a 15% increase in government fees and charges. This is like giving workers a good deal through the front door and passing through the back door to take it from them.

The 15% increase in Gov’t fees and charges was approved as part of the Fees and Charges Miscellaneous Provisions Bill 2022 which had been put before parliament.
This upward adjustment of the cost of government fees and charges aims will help the government to bring in more revenue to keep up with current trends in pricing.

However, the 15% Gov’t fees and charges will only be implemented after the President has signed it into law.
The Fees and Charges to be affected by this new amendment include the following
- Vehicle registration and driver’s license issuance by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA)
- Birth and death certificate issuance by the Birth and Death Registry
- Passport issuance by the Passports Office
According to the data available https://www.mint.gov.gh website, the current fees and charges as of 2016 below would go up by some 15%

Domestic revenue will be raised through the government’s new initiative by increasing the service charges of these agencies with the consent of the Finance Minister, who will adjust them yearly based on the average inflation rate. Prior to this, the Finance Ministry had to approve the service charge increases proposed by these agencies and negotiated with them.
