Through the Ministry of Education (MoE), the central government has increased the continuous professional development allowance for teachers for teaching and non-teaching staff in pre-tertiary schools across the country.

The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education announced the increment in a social media post saying “The CPD allowance for professional teachers has been increased from GH¢1,200 to GH¢2,400 annually.”

He indicated that non-professional teachers will see their allowance raised from GH¢800 to GH¢1,800.

The spokesperson added “The NPP Government has increased Teacher’s Professional Development Allowance (PDA) by 100%. It has been increased from GHC 1200 yearly to GHC 2400. All teaching and Non-Teaching staff with PSL 14 and above have all been paid GHC 2400 this month.”

These enhancements the Education Ministry spokesman said reflect the government’s ongoing commitment to supporting teachers in pursuing professional development and skills upgrades, ensuring they are equipped with modern skills and knowledge to deliver effective teaching.

The Continuous Professional Development (CPD) allowance was introduced in 2020 by the Government of Ghana as part of efforts to enhance the professional growth of teachers and improve the quality of education.
It provides financial support to professional and non-professional teachers in pre-tertiary schools to engage in ongoing training, acquire new teaching methodologies, and upgrade their skills.
The yearly allowance for teachers called the continuous professional teacher (CPD) allowance which is a one-time payment annually was introduced by former Minister of Education, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh.
Every teacher under the allowance scheme the immediate past Education Minister in the 2020 academic year said will recieve GHC1,200 while non-teaching staff will earn GHC600 to assist their career development.
In an address to Parliament, the Education Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh said this allowance “will enable teachers to invest in improving and upgrading their skills and keeping abreast with modern trends to assist in improving learning outcomes.”
