GTEC suspends TEWU members from governing councils amid representation dispute

The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC), in negotiation with the Ministry of Education, has hanged the representatives of governing committee of memberships of the Teachers Education Workers Union (TEWU) on the numerous public institutions for now until another change is announced.
The GTEC requested Vice-Chancellors of traditional institutions “to suspend the selection of memberships of the Teachers Education Workers Union (TEWU) on the numerous state institutions for now until another change is announced.
“The reason is because of a current misunderstanding between the TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC,” a report signed by the fill-in Director, Corporate Affairs, Jerry Sarfo, said.
Membership Hanging
The report, duplicated to the Minister of Education, the Director-General of GTEC, the Chairman of Vice-Chancellors-Ghana (VCG), the Chairman of Tertiary Education Workers Union (TEWU-GH), the Chairman TEWU-TUC and all VCs of state traditional institutions, said the GTEC was presently involving both fractions to find solutions to the deadlocks.
“In due course, TEWU members vowed in on the UCC, UEW, UPSA and CKT-UTAS governing committee, in addition to those on the UDS and KNUST committee, are by that means regarded hanged awaiting the decision the results of a gathering between TEWU-GH, TEWU-TUC and Vice-Chancellors-Ghana on May 16, 2025,” the report wrapped up.
TEWU-GH and TEWU-TUC these two unions have been entangled in an deadlock over which of them has the legal right to characterise on the governing committee of state institutions.
Position of GTEC. The GTEC, replying to the allegations by TEWU, signified that it had no desire in cheating any group or association in its licit characterisation and was very impartial and could not be threatened in the point of issue.
It made it clear in all its opinions, it was directed and lead by the judicious guidance of the Minister of Education.
The GTEC said the pulsing of representation on committee as took place at the University for Development Studies (UDS), could not be permitted. “Most universities, such as UDS, did not bring on board names of officers of TEWU, by coincidence, names to be submitted as members is inappropriate. As reported by GTEC, the essence was that the committee was much concerned in, along with, decreasing the face-off in the middle of the two parties.
Nevertheless, at an interview by the press, TEWU-TUC requested the GTEC to still maintain being objective and impartial in the deadlock.
It complimented President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, for dwelling by the rule of law to indicate TEWU-TUC as the licit characteristic on the governing committee of the various state institutions.
The General Secretary of TEWU of TUC, King James Azortibah, said at the interview with the press that “As a manager, we look forward onto GTEC to guide the institutions administrators to promote discipline in the staff who doesn’t abide by the law and exhibit unacceptable behaviours and undertake on needless and unauthorized strikes.”
TEWU of TUC, Mr Azortibah said, would defend and maintain the norms and standards of the 1992 Constitution and safeguard its heritage and cried out on its constituents to unite together against efforts to damage or weaken the sorority.
He said the sorority would move on to follow schemes promoting members’ well-being and general conditions. He stated that, TEWU of TUC had been functioning and existed, mostly in the state institutions in the country, for over 30 years, specifically 58 years ago, and many citizens in the country who had journeyed through the path of the state institutions in Ghana could be a witness to that. Some executives of our Union (TEWU of TUC) made a decision to part company with us, about three years ago.
Because they had worked for their two-term, four-year term in office (in total, eight years) but still wanted to remain there as local executives regardless the fact that the TEWU Constitution does not permit such situations.
