Ghana Teacher Prize: Introduce Award Category for Teachers in Deprived Communities – Wisdom Hammond
Introduce Award Category for Teachers in Deprived Communities is the latest call to the MoE, GES and NTC for the 2023 Ghana Teacher Prize.
Following the heated argument on social media suggesting the deliberate neglect of hard-working teachers in deprived communities, Mr. Wisdom Hammond, the Team Leader at Ghanaeducation.org has called on the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service, and the National Teaching Council to introduce a Ghana Teacher Prize Award Category for Teachers in Deprived Communities.
There are teachers who have to swim to get to school each day in Ghana, there are teachers who teach nearly the entire school or have to combine three or more classes to teach each day, there are teachers who have to burn out to teach learners in deprived communities and forfeit all the good and city life for the sake of their learners. What recognition have we given to such teachers?
The above sentiments of the chalk fraternity that teachers in deprived communities have been neglected and their efforts towards education are not being recognized, they need to be given a critical look if we are to show the smallest of recognition for the sacrifices teachers make in such communities and schools.
The government and its education sector institutions need to consider the introduction of an award category for teachers working in villages, deprived communities, and such locations in the country to help highlight their hard work and contribution to education in areas where many teachers refuse to go.
The award of prizes for the category should be motivating enough to compel others to take up postings in such areas.
The category according to him can be named the Best Teacher Award for Teachers in Deprived Communities. This will require perfect criteria and the GES further identifying all locations that meet the deprived communities or village criteria so that the teachers in such areas can also compete among themselves.
Introduce Ghana Teacher Prize Award Category Call
“If as a country, we are recognizing National Service teachers at the national award, then teachers in the hinterlands deserve better recognition” he stated while reacting to several comments from teachers who seem dissatisfied with the lack of recognition of the efforts of our teachers working in remotely located schools.
It is time for this country to place premium value on all teachers who accept posting to deprive communities and villages on during the Ghana Teacher Prize awards.

“Teachers in Ghana and all teacher unions must add their voices to this call to ensure that, this new category becomes part of the 2023 Ghana Teacher Prize” Mr. Hammond stated.
We have neglected the teachers in deprived communities for far too long, let us give them a voice through the introduction of a special category for them.
