Is College entrance exams replacing GTLE? – Answers from Dr Adutwum

Minister for Education, Dr Adutwum says the licensure examination conducted twice yearly for teachers will not be cancelled after the introduction of the College entrance examination dubbed Ghana Basic Education Skills Examination Test (GBEST).
The Education Minister’s comment comes after he was asked in a discussion monitored by AcademicWeek if the new College of Education entrance examination will replace the Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE).
“We have no plans to cancel the Ghana teacher licensure examination (GTLE) and we are also not going to replace it with the Ghana Basic Education Skills Examination Test (GBEST),” Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum stated in the discussion.
In a related development, the management of the National Teaching Council (NTC) has said admission into various government-accredited Colleges of Education next academic year will be based on WASSCE and GBEST results.
Speaking at the 12th Congregation of Atebubu College of Education, the Registrar of NTC said the GBEST will be administered in August but AcademicWeek has been informed a new date for the exams will be communicated in due course.

“We need a system that does not rely solely on WASSCE results but something in addition to the results to see if the person entering the College is fully qualified. We could have an entrance exam followed by an interview,” he stated.
The College of Education entrance examination also known as the Ghana Basic Education Skills Examination Test, Dr Christian Addai Poku at a stakeholder meeting said will ensure Teacher Training Colleges produce quality teachers.
“The GBEST will, thus, be used as the entry assessment for the trainee teachers and after completion, the students will be made to write a level and subject-based licensure examination to be qualified as professional teachers,” he stated.
According to him, the College entrance examination forms part of reforms being proposed by NTC to harmonise teacher education admissions in the country and also improve teacher education as part of the educational reforms.
