Is the Placement of SHS/TVET Based on BECE Grade or Raw Score?

Since its inception, the computerized school placement system has been based on a candidate’s raw score, but the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Secretariat says that is not the case this academic year.

An official of CSSPS said his outfit this year has prioritised aggregate or grade over the raw score to ensure a ‘free and fair’ school placement of prospective students who sat for the 2023 edition of BECE.

“We use grade first before the raw score, previously before 2017 we were using only raw scores for the school placement, but this year is aggregate before raw scores, the raw score is used to separate the tie,” the official stated.

“For example, if there are only 3 vacancies available in a particular school for 5 candidates who all have the same grade. What the computer will do is use the raw score to break the tie for 3 out of the 5 students to go to that school.

Aside from the grade and raw score, the CSSPS official said the computer placement is also done based on 6 subjects namely; English, Mathematics, Integrated Science, Social Studies and 2 other best-performed subjects of a candidate.

The Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) staff said three categories of students have been considered for placement.

  •  Regular Students,
  • Private Candidates and
  • Foreign Students.

Asked which type of Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for school students will not qualify for computer school postings this academic year, he said candidates who had an aggregate 9 in English Language or Mathematics.

“We do not possess a precise threshold for the placement in computer schools, however, if a student achieves aggregate 9 in either English Language or Mathematics, we consider that to be a threshold, and therefore, they will not be eligible for placement,” he stated.
