Is Too Much Pepper Good For The Human Body?

Most meals in Ghana have pepper as its key ingredient. The presence of pepper in a meal such as Kenkey, waakye, shito adds to its taste and the absence could make the meal feel bland, even though other spices may have been used. Many people add just enough pepper to give flavour to the food, but some others like their foods extra spicy, and would add lots of pepper to their cooking.

But is there anything wrong with eating too much pepper? In Ghana, most people love to eat their meals with “shito“(pepper stew). However, it is generally known that too much of everything is bad. Too much of pepper has a negative influence on the human today.

Some health effects of eating too much pepper.

1. Problems With Digestion
Eating too much pepper can lead to problems with digestion. When the pepper is digested, the capsicum in pepper interacts with the acids in your stomach, which could be bad if you have an ulcer, as it would only make the pain worse.

That is why people with ulcers are advised to stay away from spicy foods. Eating too much pepper can also cause nausea, which could lead to reflux. Eating too many peppers could also lead to stomach pain, painful and burning diarrhoea

2. Asthma
Asthmatic people could suffer an attack if they consume too much pepper. This happens when the pepper gets in the way of the airway, which could trigger an attack. Things could get worse if the person does not have their inhaler nearby. If you are someone who suffers from asthma, try to avoid very spicy foods.

3. May Cause Infertility issues in males
Eating too much pepper might result in infertility issues in males. This happens because pepper contains compounds known as piperine, which have been observed to damage sperm cells. It does this by increasing the activities of free radicals around the area where the sperm is stored.

Another effect of eating too much pepper is how it affects the mouth. It could damage the mucous membrane and even burn the taste buds as well.

If you have eaten too much pepper and you are looking for a way to cool your mouth, rather than drink water, which would make things worse, you should drink milk instead or eat a banana, as this would reduce the discomfort you feel in your mouth.
