Islamic SHS incident: Dampare heads Kumasi over as police launches probe
The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, is expected to visit Islamic SHS in IGP over the shooting incident as police launch a probe into the events that transpired.
It is expected to enable him to have first-hand details about the chaos that took place at the Islamic Senior High School, Abrepo on Monday, June 13, 2022, which has left many students hurt and hospitalized.
Investigations started by GPS
The Ghana Police has initiated investigations into the incident. A press statement has been issued by the police, in which it disclosed a summary of what transpired and the line of action to be taken.
“The Inspector-General of Police is proceeding to Kumasi for a first-hand assessment of the situation. The Police have commenced an investigation into the incident and further developments will be communicated,” the statement said.
Islamic SHS incident and police reactions
In the earlier reports by Ghana Education News, it was disclosed that the police opened tear gas on demonstrating students over frequent knockdowns in front of the school, which had turned the school’s entrance into a death trap for students and the entire school community.
However, the police upon arrival at the scene used excessive force to disperse the demonstrating students from the streets.
But the police service in its statement said it has restored calm to the school, while some of its men, as well as students, are receiving medical attention after sustaining injuries.
“The Police managed to disperse the rioting students and calm has since been restored… Some students and some police officers have been taken to the hospital for medical attention,” the Ghana Police Service said.
