What are the details in the latest BECE Examiner’s report on Social Studies for 2024 BECE candidates?
According to the report, candidates who sat the BECE in 2021 had the following strengths: Every 2024 BECE candidate who lacks these strengths must work hard on each of them.
(i) You must be able to explain the negative effects of colonisation on Ghana.
(ii) You must be able to explain issues relating to improving the health needs of youth and citizens.
(iii) Explain all the symbols of national unity, as well as those related to the new topics introduced.
(iv) How to improve agricultural output, science and technology in Ghana, mining, and the extraction of natural resources, as well as the benefits or importance of mining, tourism, etc.
(v) The various ways Ghanaians demonstrate their culture and new topics related to this.

The following are the weaknesses shown by candidates according to WAEC in the 2021 BECE, which all new candidates must watch carefully.

(i) How does education cause change in society?
(ii) How to ensure and maintain peace among the ethnic groups in Ghana
(iii) Definitions such as political stability, constitution, etc.
(iv) Effects of indiscipline on the individual.
(v) Mapping and related questions such as types of maps, qualities of a good map, how to draw and map Ghana and locate towns, natural resources, and tourist destinations, among others.
(vii) The calculation of distance with the application of knowledge on scale to calculate the actual distance;
(viii) benefits of relief features.

Recommendations for 2024 BECE Social Studies
To ensure students are helped to deal with the above challenges, teachers are advised to teach topics related to the environment well and provide good examples to help learners understand the concepts.
Most social studies teachers ignore the geography aspect of the curriculum, which is related to mapping skills. Under this topic, teachers must ensure that candidates can answer questions such as the following:.
- Define a map, a scale, and explain the types of scales with good examples.
- Students should be able to outline at least four qualities of a good map (identifying components of maps:
- Candidates should be able to draw the map of Ghana with specific titles, keys, or legends and show specific locations for natural resources, major towns, relief features, etc.
- The importance of maps
- Candidates must be well versed in mapping knowledge as per the curriculum.
