Opoku Ware SHS
The town of Opoku, Ghana, is where Opoku Ware Senior High School is.
Opoku Ware Senior High School, which used to be called Yaa Asantewaa College, was set up by the Gold Coast Government in response to a request from the Catholic Church in the Ashanti Region for a way for young men to get an education without having to go to St. Augustine’s College in Cape Coast.
In February 1952, the Rev. Fr. Peter Burgess talked with potential students and let 60 boys into the school.
Otumfuo Sir Osei Agyeman Prempeh II changed the name of the school to Opoku Ware because he thought it was strange for a school for men only to have a feminine name.

The school was named after Yaa Asantewaa, who was a great historical revolutionary heroine and Queen-mother of Ejisu in Ghana’s Ashanti Region. In Ghana in the year 1900, this small, thin woman bravely led the Ashanti Kings in their fight against the British colonists.
