Man City Beat Inter Milan 1-0 In Champions League Final To Complete Treble
Manchester City’s long quest for the Champions League culminated in victory over Inter Milan in Istanbul, as Pep Guardiola’s team completed the Treble.
After winning the Premier League and FA Cup, City became only the second English club to emulate Manchester United’s triple trophy haul in 1999, with Rodri’s crisp 68th-minute strike settling an attritional final.
Pep Guardiola’s all-conquering Manchester City were never at their best against a brilliantly organized Inter Milan, and they had to deal with Kevin De Bruyne’s injury in the first half.
But the throngs of City fans inside Ataturk Stadium were unconcerned as they celebrated the greatest night – and season – in the club’s history.
And it cements Guardiola’s place among the great managers, as he adds a third Champions League to the two he won at Barcelona, the last in 2011.
This was never going to be a walkover, and City had to survive a few scares when Federico Dimarco’s header bounced off the bar and Ederson made a stunning late save to deny Romelu Lukaku, but it was all about the win in the end. Guardiola and his team can now claim their place in history.
This was a night when only the outcome mattered to City, not how they achieved their greatest victory.
This was not a victory secured with the dazzling style and creativity that has become their trademark. For long stretches, it was a scrappy, sloppy performance against a well-drilled Inter side that was right in this Champions League Final until the whistle blew.
None of that matters now. The moment Rodri arrived on the end of build-up play from Manuel Akanji and Bernardo Silva to send that precise right-foot finish away from Inter’s outstanding keeper Andre Onana will be remembered forever by City fans.
City played dangerously in the final minutes, and when it was all over, Guardiola, who had been agitated in his technical area, was relatively calm as he sought consolation from opposite number Simone Inzaghi.
City’s John Stones was outstanding once again, and keeper Ederson made crucial contributions when needed.
The celebrations at the final whistle reflected a fantastic season in which City finally got their hands on the Champions League trophy and prepared to parade it around Manchester’s streets alongside the Premier League and FA Cup on Monday.
