Minority demands full rollout of Tablet distribution in Senior High Schools
The Minority in Ghana’s Parliament is pressing the Ministry of Education for a detailed strategy regarding the distribution of tablet to Senior High Schools (SHSs) under the Ghana Smart Schools Project (GSSP).
This call for transparency and inclusivity in the distribution process is aimed at ensuring that no student or school is overlooked, emphasizing the importance of equitable access to digital education resources.
Dr. Clement Apaak, Deputy Ranking Member of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Education, vocalized these concerns during a field visit by committee members to the facilities of K A Technologies Ltd in Accra.
This company is at the forefront of producing the “Students’ Mate Tablets,” which are part of the government’s One Student – One Tablet initiative to foster digitalized teaching and learning environments.
The visit by the parliamentary committee aimed to fulfill their oversight responsibilities concerning educational matters and adhered to their constitutional mandates.
The delegation, led by the Committee Chairman and MP for Fanteakwa, Kwabena Amankwah Asiamah, was given a comprehensive tour of the company’s production lines, aftercare, and call centers.
They engaged with the company’s management, who outlined the operational framework and reaffirmed their commitment to delivering high-quality products and services.
During the interactions, Mr. Lawrence Hornuvo, the General Manager of K A Technologies, emphasized the company’s dedication to maintaining the highest standards in their output.
“We pride ourselves in delivering robust, quality products and services in a timely manner, and so far, this commitment has not been compromised,” he assured the committee.
The committee members expressed satisfaction with the operational transparency at K A Technologies.
“Actually, coming here has demystified our thoughts on how these Tablets were going to get to the students; we have a full understanding of what is on the tablet, its usage, and the distribution pattern, including quantities to be distributed,” remarked Chairman Asiamah.
He also highlighted the necessity for the government to expedite payments to the company to ensure the timely production and distribution of tablets.
This would enable every student across the country to access these digital tools, which are pivotal for modern education.
Dr. Apaak shared his optimism about the project’s impact, particularly praising the local benefits. “So far what we have seen is reassuring. We got a detailed briefing about the tablets, their functionality, and capacity, and we were taken to the unit where the tablets were being assembled,” he noted.
The fact that K A Technologies is a local company means that the project not only supports Ghanaian students but also contributes to job creation and keeps financial resources within the country.
Despite the progress, Dr. Apaak underscored the Minority’s stance on seeking a full-scale rollout of the tablet distribution, rather than phased deliveries.
“We have been told that the distribution will be done in phases; however, we want a full rollout, and that is what we are advocating for,” he stated firmly.
The oversight visit was also attended by officials from the Ministry of Education, the TVET Commission, and the Free SHS Secretariat, underscoring the collaborative effort across various governmental bodies.
The Ghana Smart Schools Project, launched by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo earlier this year, aims to transform existing educational infrastructure into smart schools while providing essential technological devices to both educators and students to enhance the quality of teaching, learning, and research.
As the project progresses, the Minority’s push for a clear and inclusive distribution plan underscores the critical role of digital tools in shaping the future of education in Ghana, ensuring that every student has the resources needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving global landscape.
