Mortuary workers go on nationwide strike on November 29
Mortuary workers in Ghana will embark on a nationwide strike on November 29, 2023. The indefinite strike, starting on Wednesday, November 29, 2023, was declared by the Mortuary Workers Association of Ghana (MOWAG).
The pending strike notice was served in a statement dated November 20, 2023. According to the mortuary workers, their decision has been necessitated by the failure to resolve all grievances put forward by the workers.
The statement signed by its General Secretary, Richard Jordan, copied to the Minister of Health; Minister of National Security; Minister of Finance, Chief Executive of Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC), and the Executive Director of the National Labour Commission said “Our position is that, all mortuary workers in Ghana shall lay down their tools starting on Wednesday, 29th November, 2023, until all matters already in your domain are resolved.”

A nationwide strike by mortuary workers would pose several dangers, including:
-
Delayed or Unforeseen Burials: The inability to prepare and store bodies would lead to delays in burials, potentially causing distress and inconvenience to families and friends of the deceased. The accumulation of unpreserved bodies could also pose health risks due to the potential spread of pathogens.
-
Public Health Hazards: The improper handling and storage of bodies could increase the risk of disease outbreaks. The decomposition of bodies releases bacteria and other harmful substances that could contaminate the environment and pose health risks to the public.
-
Emotional Distress for Bereaved Families: The inability to properly lay their loved ones to rest would cause additional emotional distress for grieving families. The delay in burials could also hinder the closure process and make it more difficult for families to cope with their loss.
-
Strain on Healthcare Facilities: Hospitals and other healthcare facilities would face increased pressure to manage and store bodies, potentially diverting resources away from patient care. Overcrowding in hospital morgues could also compromise infection control measures.
-
Economic Impacts: The disruption of funeral services and related businesses could have economic consequences, affecting industries such as funeral homes, cemeteries, and transportation services.
-
Cultural and Religious Implications: In many cultures and religions, prompt and proper burial is considered an important part of the grieving process and the honoring of the deceased. A strike by mortuary workers could disrupt these traditions and cause additional distress for families and communities.
-
Legal and Ethical Concerns: The failure to properly care for and dispose of deceased bodies could raise legal and ethical concerns. The government and relevant authorities may face legal challenges and public scrutiny for failing to ensure proper handling of the deceased.
-
Potential for Public Unrest: The disruption of funeral services and the associated emotional and cultural implications could lead to public unrest and protests. Families and communities may express frustration and anger over the delays in burials and the disrespect shown to their loved ones.
