Longest serving MPs in Ghana
The parliament is a government organ responsible for making, amending, and repealing laws in a state.
No state can exist without parliamentarians who make laws. Parliamentarians play a significant role in democracy and any form of governance.
Since Ghana restored democratic rule in 1992, the parliament has welcomed a couple of members who have played a spectacular role in promoting the good will of the house.
Their contribution to debates concerning national development and the vetting of appointed ministers and directors, among others, has been productive in Ghana’s development.
This article will highlight some Ghanaian Members of Parliament (MPs) who have served their respective constituencies for a couple of years.
Alban Sumana, Kingsford Babgin
The current Speaker of the Eighth Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban S.K. Babgin, is among the longest-serving Parliamentarians in Ghana.
He became a member of Parliament for Nadawoli/Kaleo in the Upper West region of Ghana on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress from 1992 until 2021.
He became a minority leader in 2000 and became a majority leader in 2012.
He also became the second deputy speaker. Due to his hard work in Ghana’s first parliament and the seventh parliament, he was voted as the Speaker of Ghana’s eighth parliament.
Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu
The Honourable Member for Suame in the Ashanti region
He first entered Parliament in 1996 on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party.
He is the current majority leader and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs. There is speculation that the Honourable Member will not contest for the Suame Parliamentary seat in the 2024 Parliamentary elections.
Haruna Iddrisu
He started serving in the fourth parliament of Ghana. Haruna Iddrisu is the current Member of Parliament for Tamale South Constituency in the northern region of Ghana.
He has served on numerous committees in Parliament. He became the minority leader in the seventh parliament.
He is among the young Ghanaian Parliamentarians (MPs) who have made significant impacts.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong
The current Member of Parliament for Assin Central is in the central region.
He has been a Member of Parliament since 2001. He has served on numerous committees in Ghana’s parliament.
Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka
Honourable Muntaka has served as MP from the fourth till date.
He represented the Asawase Constituency in the Ashanti region of Ghana on the ticket of the NDC.
He has served as the Majority Chief Whip and the current Minority Chief Whip in the eight Parliaments of Ghana.
K. T. Hammond
The current Minister for Trade and Industry is among the longest-serving MPs in Ghana. K.T. Hammond joined Ghana’s parliament in 2001, representing the people of Adansi Asokwa in the Ashanti region.
He served under the finance and minins committee.
