MP for Atwima Kwanwoma Constituency Addresses Constituents’ Unrealistic Demands

In a recent interview on Kumasi-based Hello FM, Member of Parliament for Atwima Kwanwoma Constituency, Kofi Amankwa-Manu, shed light on the often unrealistic demands placed on legislators by their constituents. He emphasized how constituents approach MPs with problems that fall outside their official duties, such as requesting assistance with tasks like clearing weeds around public toilet facilities.
Amankwa-Manu, who also serves as a Deputy Minister for Defence, shared an amusing yet illustrative example of a peculiar request he received from a community. During a community engagement event, residents asked him to personally clear the overgrown weeds surrounding a public toilet. The MP obliged the request to address the community’s concerns but later had to explain that this responsibility lay with the local assembly.
He was taken aback when he discovered that the toilet in question was not just a community amenity but also generated income. He questioned the use of funds collected from users and expressed his concern about its allocation by community members.

Amankwa-Manu’s experience highlights a widespread issue in Ghana, where many constituents have misconceptions about the roles of their MPs. In their communities, MPs are often seen as problem solvers and development agents, burdening them with tasks and responsibilities that exceed their official mandates.
As this situation persists, it places undue pressure on MPs, leading to potential inefficiencies and even corruption. This discussion underscores the importance of educating constituents about the specific duties of their legislators and the need for a clear demarcation of responsibilities between MPs, local assembly members, and other relevant authorities.
The interview serves as a valuable reminder that MPs, while eager to serve their communities, must also manage and clarify the expectations of their constituents to fulfill their roles effectively and efficiently. It is a testament to the complexities and challenges faced by elected officials and their continuous efforts to navigate the intricate web of community and national responsibilities.
