NSMQ 2023: Primetime Stands Firm on Prempeh College Protest Decision
The National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) 2023 witnessed an intense debate as Primetime Limited, the competition’s organizers, upheld their decision not to award any marks to Prempeh College for their answer in a riddle during the semi-final contest between Opoku Ware and Pope John Seminary School.
Prempeh College initiated a protest, requesting a review of the result and the allocation of the required marks for their answer. However, in a letter addressed to Prempeh College, Primetime Limited announced their conclusion after a thorough review of the matter.
The organizers clarified that their decision had been based on discussions with their Physics consultant and the Quiz Mistress, Professor Elsie Effah Kaufmann, who exercises discretion in determining if a contestant’s answer is sufficiently responsive.
Primetime Limited highlighted that they had allowed protests from schools to ensure fairness in the adjudication of contests and would rectify errors if a school’s protest had merit. They noted that they were known for pausing contests to address valid protests. In this case, the Physics consultant reviewed Prempeh College’s protest, explained the concepts to the team, and the team accepted the explanation.

The dispute originated when Prempeh College contested the riddle’s answer during the semi-final contest. They argued that their answer, “principle of superposition,” should have received full marks, as it was synonymous with the “principle of linear superposition” mentioned in the contest as the answer.
Primetime Limited expressed appreciation for Prempeh College’s passion and interest in the NSMQ. However, they drew the line at insinuations of bias or manipulation, emphasizing their commitment to fairness in the competition.
Opoku Ware advanced to the NSMQ 2023 finale alongside Presec Legon and Achomota School, following this controversial semi-final clash.
While the debate over the riddle may have stirred controversy, it remains an integral part of the NSMQ, showcasing the dedication and passion of participating schools in Ghana’s premier science and math competition. As the competition progresses, the focus will undoubtedly return to the exceptional scientific knowledge and talent displayed by the students in the final round of the NSMQ 2023.
