Nana Addo: I protected your jobs, paid Covid Salaries: 15% COLA – Are Public Sector Workers Ungrateful?

- Does 15% COLA and demo show public sector workers are ungrateful? Read what President Nana Addo said
- I protected your jobs, paid you in full while you sat home during Covid, President Akufo-Addo thanks labour for the COLA deal, but is this a proverbial “Thank You”?
President Nana Addo thanked public sector workers for calling off the COLA strike after the 15% deal was reached, but it seems the president feels teachers and all other public sector workers whose jobs he protected and paid them fully have not been grateful as they hit him hard with their COLA strike.
I protected your jobs, and paid you in full while you sat home during Covid, the president indicated while speaking at the 2022 NPP National Elections in Accra.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo said: “I want to say big thanks to organized labour” for reaching an agreement with the government during their strike over their Cost of Living Allowance (COLA) allowance “because it then demonstrates also the concerns our party has, always had and will continue to have for the concerns of the workers and the people of Ghana”.
Speaking at the New Patriotic Party (NPP) national delegates conference underway at the Accra Sports Stadium, Mr Akufo-Addo said: “During the [COVID-19] pandemic, at the height of the pandemic, people had to stay at home; no single worker in the public sector was dismissed, no salary cuts were visited on the workers in the public sector.”
“On the contrary”, he noted, “not only were they paid in full”, but “they also had their jobs protected”.
“We went further to make it possible to organize free water, free electricity, for the ordinary people of our country”, he pointed out.
“That is the measure of the concern of the New Patriotic Party for working people in our country,” he added
What do you make of his statement on the government paying public sector workers, protecting their jobs and other freebies? Taxes have since been slapped on goods and services to recoup funds expended on freebies by the government.
After the government gave Ghanaians a 50% reduction is utility tariffs, it introduced 1% COVID-19 health levy to recover the cost of 2020 water and electricity freebies.
Nana Addo protected your jobs, paid Covid Salaries and you demanded 20% COLA and got 15% COLA – Are You As A Public Sector Worker Ungrateful?
