Reject change of election date suggestion by EC – Kelvin Taylor to NDC

Reject change of election date suggestion by EC - Kelvin Taylor to NDC

Kelvin Taylor, of With All Due Respect fame, has called on the NDC and other political parties to reject every intention of the EC to change the election date from December 7th to another. He made this  public during his 29th January 2024 programme on Facebook.

According to the EC, there are reasons why the date needs to be changed. Per the information made public by Kelvin Taylor, the EC has disclosed that just in case there is a runoff, it will need about three weeks to prepare for the runoff. Again, he disclosed that the EC was also considering the period for the inauguration and transition from one government to the other after the election.

However, Kelvin Taylor questioned the role of the EC in issues regarding the inauguration and transition.

“Transition of government is not the work of the EC; hence, why should the EC be planning transaction issues when the government is to set up a transition committee?” Kelvin Taylor was quizzed.

According to him, the EC has invited parties to come and discuss the possibility of changing the election date. He has called on the NDC to stand up against every suggestion regarding the changing of the voting date.

READ: NPP Parliamentary Primaries were Lost by MoE Officials

In a related story, the Seventh Day Adventist (SDA) Church has also raised concerns about the election being held on Saturday, December 7th, 2024, which happens to be their day of worship. Kelvin Taylor also stated that some so-called Men of God have indicated that John Dramani Mahama of the NDC will win the election if it is held on December 7th because that day is a Saturday, which is John Mahama’s day of birth.

The facts of reality are that other elections since 1957 have been held on Saturdays and Sundays without any issue; hence, the concerns of the members of the SDA church cannot lead to the change of the election date.

READ: The Bank of Ghana has cut the policy rate to 29.0%

Kelvin Taylor suggested that the EC is trying to cook and steal the verdict for the NPP, hence the change in the election date.

While challenging the current suggestion for the chance of the election dates and processes, he suggested that the EC should not consider changing the election date but instead expand those who qualify for special voting to include religious bodies such as the SDA Church.

He believes this is the best and most proactive way to deal with such challenges.

The Bank of Ghana has cut the policy rate to 29.0%

The Bank of Ghana has cut the policy rate to 29.0%

The Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Ghana has lowered its lending rate from 30% to 29.0%

The Chairman of the Committee, Dr Ernest Addison, made this known during its 116th meeting on January 29, 2024.

The decision was taken following a steady decline in inflation, from 54.0% in December 2022 to 23.4% in December 2023, despite the inherent dangers.

“The latest forecast suggests that the disinflation process will continue, and headline inflation is expected to ease to around 13-17% by the end of 2024 before gradually trending back to within the medium-term target range of 6-10% by 2025. These forecasts notwithstanding, there are upside risks to the inflation outlook, and there is a need for strict implementation of the 2024 budget and a tight monetary policy stance to sustain the disinflation process”.

Dr Addison Chairman of teh Bank of Ghana explained that several factors had supported the disinflation process, including the tightening monetary policy stance throughout 2023, favourable international crude oil prices which led to stable ex-pump prices and transportation costs, and relative stability in the exchange rate.

“The latest forecast suggests that the disinflation process will continue, and headline inflation is expected to ease to around 13 and 17 per cent by the end of 2024 before gradually trending back to within the medium-term target range of 6-10 per cent by 2025,” he said.

The Governor, however, noted that there could be upside risks to the inflation outlook, hence, the need for strict implementation of the 2024 budget and a tight monetary policy stance to sustain the disinflation process.

In the banking sector, Dr Addison stated that the bank’s liquidity and profitability positions had improved in the aftermath of the domestic debt restructuring.

“It is expected that early recapitalisation and effective risk management by banks will help promote overall banking sector stability and resilience and ensure effective financial intermediation to strengthen the economic recovery efforts,” he said.

The policy rate is a key tool for checking inflation and enabling a positive effect on the cost of borrowing in the country.

The Ghana National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GNCCI) advocated a reduction in the policy rate to bolster business growth amidst rising borrowing costs.

On the domestic economy, the Governor said there were clear indications that the current macroeconomic framework being implemented with the support of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme yielded positive results, adding that the macroeconomic fundamentals have all trended in the right direction.

Overall, the MPC noted that global growth had remained relatively subdued in 2023, while the ease in global inflation had triggered a pause in monetary policy tightening across key economies.

Speaking about domestic macroeconomic conditions, he indicated that there had been a gradual recovery in economic activity, due to the positive results of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Extended Credit Facility (ECF) programme.

“Growth, however, remains below potential, requiring policy support, including help from the supply side,” he said.

See the Faces of the 14 Suspects in the Maj Mahama Homicide Case

The faces of the 14 Suspects in the Maj Mahama Homicide Case have been made public for the first time since the case started.

For the first time, GHOne TV has shown the faces of 14 men standing trial over the murder of a young military Maj Mahama, officer in the Central Region in 2017.

An angry crowd at Denyira-Obuasi lynched the late officer, Major Maxwell Mahama, after they thought he was an armed burglar.

The gang smashed him to death with stones, building blocks, and sticks, then they burned him alive, capturing the harrowing incident on video, which went viral and upset the nation after it was released.

The case has been in court since then.

The latest update from the Accra-based media house shows a group of young men, all dressed in white tops and plain black or grey trousers, escorting themselves out of what appears to be a courtroom.

Some uniformed security personnel from the Ghana Prisons Service stand side by side with the men, allowing them to file past in between them while they are handcuffed in pairs or twos.

The video caption on X said that there were 14 people accused of murder of Maj Mahama Maxwell.

The Accra Central District Court has ordered the 14 people accused of killing Major Maxwell Adam Mahama as Denkyira Obuasi to stand trial for murder at the High Court.

The accused persons include William Baah, the Assemblyman from Denkyira Obuasi, Bernard Asamoah, also known as Daddy, Kofi Nyarko, also known as Abortion, Akwasi Baah, Kwame Tuffour, Joseph Appiah Kubi, Michael Anim, and Bismarck Donkor.

Ghanaian peacekeeper (Soldier) killed in violence in South Sudan – UN statement

Ghanaian peacekeeper killed in violence in South Sudan - UN statement 2021 Ghana Armed Forces Recruitment

A Ghanaian peacekeeper has been killed in violence in South Sudan, according to a UN statement released.

A United Nations peacekeeper from Ghana has been killed alongside some civilians after clashes between rival local groups in the Abyei region on South Sudan’s border with Sudan, a U.N. statement said.

According to the statement by the United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei (UNISFA), the clashes occurred in three locations in the Abyei area on Saturday.

This led to casualties and the evacuation of civilians to UNISFA bases to provide safety for those caught up in the violence, the statement said.

During the fighting, one UNISFA base came under attack and although the attack was repelled “tragically a Ghanaian peacekeeper was killed during the incident,” the statement said.

The U.N. mission said it was still verifying the number of people killed, injured and displaced by the violence.

Clashes between different communities are common in South Sudan, which is still reeling from years of a devastating war that pitted the country’s leader, Salva Kiir, against his former deputy, Riek Machar, in a battle between rival tribes.

The U.N. statement did not say which tribes were involved in Saturday clashes.

The Abyei region, rich in oil resources, experiences frequent bouts of violence. Rival factions of the Dinka ethnic group are locked in a dispute over the location of an administrative boundary.

The ownership of Abyei itself is disputed between Sudan and South Sudan, which declared independence from Sudan in 2011.

Wontumi arrives at Manhyia to face Ashanti chiefs: Watch full video here Stop Calling NPP for Help Go To NDC - Wontumi Speaks To The Victim Of Akosombo Dam Spillage

Chairman Wontumi, Ashanti Regional Chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), born Bernard Antwui Boasiako, has arrived in Manhyia to face Ashanti chiefs at the Asanteman Traditional Council.

The Asanteman Traditional Council ordered the NPP to produce Chairman Wontumi even on his sick bed after Wontumin failed to honour an invitation to Manhyia.

Today,  Monday, January 29, 2024, he has honoured the invitation after failing to honour the previous summons.

He was summoned to appear before the chiefs after he reportedly made derogatory remarks against the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

Pictures of the Ashanti Regional chairman lying on a sick bed in a health facility went viral after the leadership of the party, led by its general secretary, Justin Frimpong Kodua, informed the chiefs last week that Wontumi couldn’t honour their summons because he had not been feeling well.

A robust, healthy Wontumi arrived to the Manhyia in a video from Accra’s Starr FM on X.

While greeting several chiefs, Wontumi bowed and shook hands.

Earlier, sources stated that the Kumasi Traditional Council would decide the case.

Myjoyonline.com reports that council members are attending a vital meeting on the topic.

The report stated that this conference will decide how to proceed with Chairman Wontumi’s case.

After making statements that offended the second-highest decision-making body of the Asante Kingdom, which is confined to traditional leaders, Chairman Wontumi was proclaimed wanted.

During the screening of Ashanti Region parliamentary candidates, Wontumi reportedly had a confrontation with the Kokosohene, Nana Kwaku Dua, when he questioned the Asantehene’s authority.

On Monday, January 29, 2024, the two were scheduled to appear before the Kumasi Traditional Council with private lawyer Maurice Ampaw, who made similar claims on Wontumi Radio.

Myjoyonline.com reported that it found a letter from Council Registrar Kwame Adusei Agyemang calling Nananom to rejoin the meeting.

READ: What is the difference between Asantehene and Dormaahene?

The letter said, “Greetings Nananom, this is to respectfully inform you of the Kumasi Traditional Council’s sitting scheduled for Monday, January 29, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. prompt. Please try to attend.”

Wontumi was seen at the Bantama constituency on Saturday, January 27, 2024, during the New Patriotic Party’s parliamentary primaries, despite being unwell.

He informed the media he was healthy, but the KTC has not decided if he will present.

Maurice Ampaw, who was meant to accompany him, has signalled his unreadiness to come before the Council.

Many government workers are asking one crucial question in light of recent developments in the public sector: “When will CAGD pay public sector workers’ February 2024 salaries?”

We have the answers and explanations for this question below.

When will CAGD pay public sector workers’ February 2024 salaries?

The government of Ghana has already indicated the dates on which each month’s salary will be paid for the year 2024.

It was made public in a memorandum released by the office of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department (CAGD).

The release detailed all the dates for each month.

The release, which was signed by Kwasi Kwaning-Bosompem, the Acting Controller and Accountant-General of Ghana, aimed at providing a proactive update to all public sector workers who are paid through the government’s payroll system.

The date for the payment of the February 2024 salary as released is February 22, 2024. Those who do not get any alerts four to five days after the indicated date will have to make follow-ups. Again, the government has disclosed that public sector workers who do not link their Ghana cards to the CAGD pay system will not be paid their salaries. If you are not sure whether you have completed the process, do well to read this post No salary payment for workers without a Ghana Card (CAGD) and read How to check merged SSNIT to Ghana Card Number To CAGD Status: Step-by-step guide

This significant piece of information is directed toward all salaried workers enrolled in the Government of Ghana’s payroll system, encompassing a wide spectrum of individuals, including civil servants, members of the Ghana Education Service (GES), and various other public servants.

“Notice has been given that the salaries and wages of civil servants, the Ghana Education Service (GES), and all other public servants paid by the Controller & Accountant-General’s Department will be paid on the dates indicated below.” the official communiqué stated.

Salaries and pay for government officials, the Ghana Education Service, and other public servants are scheduled to be disbursed on the 22nd of February for the following month. Staff members should expect their bank accounts to be credited with the funds starting on this date.

All government personnel can benefit greatly from this notification, not just because of its procedural importance. A seamless transition into the new month is assured when individuals are given precise insight into the particular date for pay disbursement in February. This helps them to plan and manage their money wisely.
