National Council of Private School Teachers (NCOPST) has advised all private schools to pay teachers the minimum wage which became effective on 1st January 2020.
In a communique copied to this portal, the council said…
EDUCATION ON THE DAILY MINIMUM WAGE AND MINIMUM WAGE SALARY
As part of the core mandate of the National Council of Private School Teachers to create awareness and a conducive environment for private school teachers, the management of the National Executive of NCOPST pursuant to Section 113 (1) of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651) write to inform all private school teachers across the length and breadth of the country that following a meeting on the determination of the National Daily Minimum Wage by the Tripartite Committee held on 26th August 2019 that every employee in Ghana including private school teachers must be marked a daily wage not less than GHC11.82.
To state clearly, a basic salary of GHC319.14 is to be paid by school owners to their respective teachers, who hold any certificate below Diploma every month that is tax-exempt.
This took effect from 1st January 2020. It is noteworthy that some of the private school owners have been adhering to such directives and are doing even well to pay beyond this aforementioned minimum wage. We commend them immensely for such an effort.
However, we are humbly using this medium to urge school owners who are adamant about these directives as the Labour law states categorically that those institutions who flout such directive shall be sanctioned in accordance with the law.
This awareness is to foster a high level of commitment in improving the income and productivity levels of both public and private sector workers in Ghana.
We, therefore, wish all private school teachers and owners a resounding Happy Easter celebration
NB: GHC700 have been pegged or earmarked for Class C schools and private school teachers who hold certificates below Diploma (WASSCE or SHS certificate etc.) as proposed salary from the council (NCOPST).
