No more Buffer Stock – Mahama promises to decentralise SHS food supply

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, has promised to make substantial changes to how food is purchased for Senior High Schools (SHS) in Ghana as he promises to Decentralise it.

His changes to policy under the Free Senior High School (SHS) plan center on getting rid of the National Food Buffer Stock Company’s current centralized supply system.

Mahama’s proposed amendments seek to give school administrators the authority and resources to directly purchase food from local suppliers.

Mahama presented his idea for a decentralized method of food procurement in SHSs while on his “Building Ghana Tour” in Kambatiak, in the North East Region.

In line with his proposal, school administrators would have the authority to buy food products from nearby farmers and marketplaces by receiving feeding payments that are presently overseen by the National Food Buffer Stock directly.

This change aims to support local economies and agriculture while improving the freshness and nutritional value of the meals served to pupils. Mahama stressed the advantages of this customized buying approach.

“The school headmasters will be in charge of obtaining food for the kids,” he declared.

Schools would be able to buy a range of fresh and nutrient-dense foods directly from local farmers by eliminating the intermediary, including vegetables, beans, and groundnuts.

He contended that doing this will guarantee that nutritional needs are swiftly satisfied in addition to raising the standard of meals provided to children.

The suggested policy is a part of Mahama’s larger effort to enhance the current Free SHS program, making it more effective and suited to the need of students all throughout the nation.

Mahama thinks the program may be made “better” and more advantageous for the health and well-being of the children while also supporting local economies by decentralizing the acquisition of food.

This reform indicates a shift in the direction of increased school.
