Overcoming Procrastination: Four (4) Essential Ways To Do It

There are many things that need to be done but overcoming procrastination, taking proactive steps, and achieving the inherent results is a big problem.

“It is okay to want to be at the top of your game. But to achieve that, you must avoid procrastination. These are four essential steps to overcome procrastination.”

– Gildas Tchekpo

Decide What You Want to Do

Everybody is doing something. Everybody is working on something. But few people get to finish what they start. So, before you choose a career, a project, a new venture, etc., be sure with no iota of doubt that the outcome is going to be sustainable and rewarding.

It is the outcome that encourages you to get going. So, if you plan to become a lawyer, you must have inclinations related to that profession. Those inclinations embedded in you represent the embers that keep your desire alive.

Therefore, it’s essential to base your decision on what you want and can do and not on what you see others do or what seems to work for others. Remember that every excellent decision bears its fruits. In sum, decide what you want to do wisely.

Figure out What It Takes to Better Achieve Your Goal

Knowing what you want is essential but what it takes to achieve it is key to turning it into a reality. If you plan to become a medical doctor, figure out how to study passionately for it to become an excellent doctor.

You must associate yourself with people who are already in that profession, find out practices that are related to your field and challenges that you may encounter. Note every new findings, achievements, and mode of operations related to your field. This knowledge will equip you for better performances as you work towards achieving your goal.

It is smart and safe to have a splendid idea about what it takes to achieve your career, your project, your new venture, etc. Knowing this keeps you excited and you can easily direct your energy towards what occupies your mind. This frame of mind helps you to avoid procrastination. You don’t want to postpone what you feel your happiness depends on.

Set a Timetable

Overcoming Procrastination requires proper time management and usage. If you are not checking the time, you will soon find out the day is over and you are yet to start work. There is a reason for a specific time to finish our tests at school. To be focused, you need to know how you spend every second. You can’t just want to become an engineer and start working towards it. Ask yourself when you will graduate.

Yes, you must write the long-term plan and break it into smaller achievable plans. This implies you have a clear timetable that informs you about what you will do right every day to achieve maximum success every semester until the end of your training. We are more productive when we set a goal and plan to achieve it.

Without a doubt, it is the safest way to identify procrastination when it slows us down. If your daily timetable does not get properly executed, it is shifting your goalpost and you might end up spending more time achieving your goal. Monitor yourself lest you procrastinate and cannot achieve your goal in good time or for good. Bottom line: set a workable timetable.

Work on it

Finally, overcoming procrastination requires efforts to work on it. Once you know what you want to do, what it takes to do it and how you want to do it, you need to start. To start is the most important part. If you don’t start, you won’t achieve any portion of it. And if procrastination were some devil, this is the place and time it will distract you and stop you from starting.

You will want to wait for the right time, have the right assets, be in the right frame of mind, etc. But there is no such thing as the right time when you have an excellent idea of what you want, what it takes to achieve it, and how to achieve it. This is the time to kick start. This is the time to win over procrastination. Take the chance and worry about the challenges, if there are any at all, on your way.

So, if you are following your plans, overcome hurdles without difficulties. Get started. You won’t become that professional you dream of if you just spend your time thinking about the possibilities. Read those books and know more about that profession. It is the start that associates you with the goal. Get started.

Procrastination is present in our daily activities. We sometimes just create a platform for it by doing nothing to avoid it. But if we want to be successful in our education, our projects, our relationships, our ventures, etc., we must take seriously these essential steps.”Gildas Tchekpo

Now is time to put into action you strategies for overcoming procrastination.
