PHOTOS: Asantehene, Asanteman takes over Berekum

In a captivating display of culture and tradition, Asanteman, under the esteemed leadership of Asantehene Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, made a grand entrance into Berekum, a community nestled in the Bono Region. The occasion marked the final funeral rite of the late paramount chief of the Berekum Traditional Area (Berekumhene), Daasebre Dr Amankona Diawuo II, held on Thursday, November 23, 2023.

Despite an undercurrent of tension stemming from a perceived feud between the Asantehene and Dormaahene, Osagyefo Oseadeeyo Nana Agyeman Badu I, who also serves as the chairman of the Bono Regional House of Chiefs, the spectacle unfolded with unparalleled grandeur.

The Asantehene’s attendance at the funeral had initially been injuncted due to the rumored rivalry. However, Asanteman’s arrival reverberated through Bono land, leaving an indelible mark on the proceedings.

Images captured and shared by Opemsuo Radio on November 24, 2023, showcased a rich exhibition of Ashanti culture in the heart of Berekum. Asanteman’s convoy, comprising over 40 vehicles, including VIP buses and the regal Otumfuo’s convey adorned with Toyota Land Cruisers, a Range Rover, and two Toyota Tundras, along with police vehicles, created a visual spectacle.

True to tradition, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, adorned in regal attire, graced the funeral grounds on a palanquin, symbolizing his authority over Berekum, an enclave under Asanteman’s influence despite its geographical location in the Bono Region.

The onlookers were captivated as the Asantehene’s presence ignited a vibrant atmosphere filled with singing, dancing, drumming, and various enchanting displays of Akan culture. The Omanhene Park in Berekum transformed into a cultural haven, with attendees eagerly seeking a glimpse of the revered leader of Asanteman.

The clash of cultures and the melding of traditions painted a vivid picture of unity amid regional diversity, reminding all present of the rich tapestry that makes up Ghana’s cultural landscape.
