Police Arrest 3 Suspects In Killing Of Man On Bronx Subway Car
Three people have been arrested in connection with the death of a man on a Bronx subway car last week, police announced Tuesday.
William Alvarez, a 45-year-old Bronx resident, was fatally shot after arguing with one of the suspects on a D Train in the Bronx around 5 a.m. Friday. According to police, what happened was captured on surveillance video from trains, tube stations and the street.
The three are charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon. On Monday, members of the United States Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force discovered them in a Bronx apartment building.
The suspects, Justin Herde, 24, Betty Cotto, 38, and Alfredo Trinidad, 42, were apprehended by members of the US Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force on Monday at an apartment in the Bronx, according to the NYPD.
They were charged with murder and criminal possession of a weapon for the killing of William Alvarez, 45, who was shot in the stomach after getting into an argument with one of the suspects on a D Train in the Bronx around 5 a.m. Friday, according to police.
According to police, the incident was captured on surveillance videos from trains, tube stations and the street, which assisted investigators in identifying and locating the suspects.
Alvarez, a father of two, was pronounced dead at a hospital shortly after being shot. His family and friends described him as a hardworking and loving father who was deeply committed to his children.
The motive for the shooting is unknown, but police say it was unrelated to gang activity or robbery.
The fatal shooting marks the third death in the tube system this year. It came shortly after a 35-year-old man was killed and five others were injured in a shooting at another tube station in the Bronx earlier this month.
WABC-TV reports that transit crimes are up 13% from this time last year. The NYPD has implemented longer, 12-hour shifts for police officers assigned to the underground system in response to the increase in crime.
The MTA board, which oversees the underground system, discussed the most recent crime statistics during its monthly committee meetings on Monday. The board members expressed concern for the safety of the riders and workers, urging the city to send more police officers and mental health professionals to the tube system.
