Billionaire Widow Donates $1 Billion To Cover Tuition At Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Ruth Gottesman, the widow of billionaire financier David Gottesman, has left an indelible mark on the future of medical education through her pioneering philanthropy. The billionaire widow donates $1 Billion to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx.
Ruth Gottesman’s legacy, at 93 years old, goes far beyond her enormous wealth. She was a former professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine who spent her career researching learning disabilities and advocating for adult literacy programmes.
She is now the chair of the college’s board of trustees, and she is still shaping its future. The importance of Ruth Gottesman’s contribution cannot be underestimated.
It is the largest gift ever given to a medical school in the United States. With this extraordinary act of generosity, she has forever changed the face of medical education. Financial constraints will no longer derail the ambitions of aspiring doctors and researchers.
Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s annual tuition is currently nearly $60,0001. For many students, the financial burden can be overwhelming. Ruth Gottesman’s visionary gift will ensure that future generations of medical students receive full tuition coverage.
This radical shift ensures that the college can attract students who are committed to its mission, regardless of their financial situation. Ruth’s late husband, David Gottesman, was a protégé of legendary investor Warren Buffett and an early investor in Berkshire Hathaway Inc. When he passed away in September 2022, he left behind a significant portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway stocks. Ruth Gottesman, with characteristic humility, revealed that her husband’s instructions were simple: “Do whatever you think is right with it.”.
The Bronx, where the college is located, has significant health challenges. As the most unhealthy county in New York State, it urgently requires dedicated healthcare professionals. Ruth Gottesman’s donation not only eliminates financial barriers, but it also enables students to pursue ambitious projects and ideas that would otherwise be out of reach.
According to Yaron Tomer, the Marilyn and Stanley Katz Dean at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, “This donation radically revolutionizes our ability to continue attracting students who are committed to our mission, not just those who can afford it”. Ruth Gottesman’s legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those who have followed in her footsteps.
Note: The annual tuition for Albert Einstein College of Medicine’s MD programme is almost $60,000, and fourth-year students will receive reimbursement for their spring semester tuition.
