Police arrests lotto agent, writer for duping Alpha Lotto Company
An Accra Circuit Court heard from Samuel Asante Arthur, a lotto agent who is accused of making up accounts to steal GHS143,154 from the Alpha Lotto company.
Abigail Serwa Appiah, who wrote lotto stories, was also in the dock.
Arthur, who is 51, and Abigail, who is 32, have been charged with plotting to commit a crime and lying.
The judge, Mrs. Susana Eduful, did not listen to their pleas and let them go free on bail.
The case will be heard again on December 22.
Chief Inspector Samuel Ahiabor was in charge of the prosecution. He said that the complainant, Joseph Gyapong, worked for Alpha Lotto Company Limited as a lotto agent.
The prosecution said that Arthur worked for the Company as a lotto agent and was in charge of getting lotto booklets and tickets from other writers before the winning numbers were announced.
It said that Abigail lived in Labadi and worked for the same company as Arthur, but the complainant didn’t know about it.
The prosecution said that in April 2022, Arthur and Abigail came up with a plan for Abigail to write him a fake winning ticket whenever the winning numbers were announced after the end of lotto business. This way, he could show the complainant that the numbers were winners.
On April 20 of this year, Abigail allegedly wrote a winning ticket for 2.50 GHC, which was worth 600 GHC, and Arthur gave it to the complainant to be paid.
The prosecution said that the two accused people made and turned in a fake winning ticket for GHS20,000 more than once. When Arthur got the money, he and Abigail split it.
It said that between April 2021 and March 2022, Arthur took advantage of his job and lied on the pay list (weekly statement form) of real Alpha Lotto winners so that he could pay himself GHS143,154.00.
The prosecution said that during the company’s annual accounting period, a theft of GHS 143,154.00 was discovered. When Arthur was questioned, he admitted taking the money by falsifying the account of the company and giving GHS15,000 back to the person who reported him.
Arthur begged for more time so he could pay the rest of the money.
The prosecution said that Arthur ran away, and the person who filed the complaint told the police about it. The two accused people were then arrested at Labadi.
