PRESEC wins 2026 NSMQ and becomes the 9-STAR GENERAL of NSMQ
PRESEC-Legon has won the 2026 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ), defeating Accra Academy and St. Augustine’s College in a tightly contested Grand Finale to claim a record ninth championship.
The historic victory moves the Presbyterian Boys’ Secondary School, Legon, from an eight-time champion to the first nine-time NSMQ winner, further strengthening its position as the most successful school in the history of the competition.
The final produced a clear winner, but the scores showed how competitive the contest was. PRESEC finished on 40 points, Accra Academy recorded 33 points, while St. Augustine’s College ended the competition with 27 points.
With the result, the prediction that PRESEC had the strongest statistical case before the final has now been confirmed on the biggest stage.

PRESEC completes the journey to nine.
PRESEC entered the 2026 Grand Finale with eight NSMQ trophies already in its cabinet.

The Legon-based school had previously won the competition in 1995, 2003, 2006, 2008, 2009, 2020, 2022 and 2023. Its eight titles were already the highest total recorded by any school before the 2026 contest.
The 2026 victory therefore represents more than another championship.
It is the ninth chapter in a remarkable NSMQ record that has stretched across three decades.
Nine trophies. Nine stars. One undisputed NSMQ dynasty.
PRESEC can now proudly carry the title of the 9-STAR GENERAL of NSMQ.
The final score tells the story
The Grand Finale brought together three schools with very different histories in the competition.
PRESEC arrived with eight previous championships. St. Augustine’s College, popularly known as AUGUSCO, had two previous victories, while Accra Academy was appearing in the Grand Finale for the first time.
The final score was:
PRESEC-Legon — 40 points
Accra Academy — 33 points
St. Augustine’s College — 27 points
PRESEC’s seven-point advantage over Accra Academy was enough to secure the trophy after a contest that kept the three schools within competitive range.
For Accra Academy, finishing second in its first-ever Grand Finale is itself a major achievement.
For AUGUSCO, the 2026 campaign ends with another appearance among Ghana’s elite NSMQ schools.
For PRESEC, however, the night belongs to history.
PRESEC’s road to the Grand Finale
The 2026 championship was not handed to PRESEC.
The school had to navigate the demanding knockout stages before reaching the final.
In the quarter-final, PRESEC produced one of the strongest performances of the competition, scoring 56 points to defeat Mfantsipim School and Presbyterian SHS Bompata.
The performance gave PRESEC a strong statistical platform heading into the semi-final.
In the semi-final, PRESEC again secured its place in the Grand Finale after recording 44 points, ahead of St. John’s School and Tamale SHS.
That meant PRESEC entered the final having already demonstrated both scoring strength and the ability to perform under pressure.
The final result has now completed that progression.
A historic ninth title
PRESEC’s dominance in NSMQ has been built over several generations.
Its first championship came in 1995. The school returned to the top in 2003 and 2006 before producing consecutive victories in 2008 and 2009.
After a lengthy wait, PRESEC returned to the summit in 2020.
The school then won again in 2022 and successfully defended the title in 2023.
The 2026 victory adds another title after a two-year absence from the Grand Finale.
It also reinforces PRESEC’s remarkable ability to return to the highest level of the competition even after setbacks.
The 9-STAR GENERAL has arrived
There was a reason PRESEC was regarded as a serious favourite before the 2026 final.
The school had the strongest historical record, significant Grand Finale experience and one of the highest scores recorded during the 2026 knockout stages.
The numbers pointed in one direction.
The final has now provided the answer.
