Rainstorm rips up Bornikorpe D/A Basic School structure roofing
In a recent news, staff and students of Bornikorpe D/A Basic School are facing a difficult situation as their classroom’s block roofing has been removed by a terror rainstorm.
The rainstorm happened earlier on Monday morning. it was noted that the rainstorm didn’t only destroy the school’s roofing but it’s wooden structure used by the junior high school students as well.
The Presbyterian Church of Ghana in that area also suffered same damage that same day.
Mr. Lawrence Katey Nunekpeku, the assembly man for the Bornikope Electoral area, reported to the Ghana News Agency that when the rainstorm happened, people around sought shelter nearby while some also ran for their lives by leaving the scene.
the rainstorm caused flood leading to injuries and destruction of properties.
This rainstorm occurrence remembers us of a tragic event which happened in the Northern Region of Ghana on April ,2019 which destroyed lives and properties. Not only that, homes, agricultural lands and foods were also destroyed leading to draught and economic turmoil in the area.
As recognized by the GNA, even though the school’s population still returned to the school the following day, it was indicative that they were seen loitering around the destroyed premises. Normal school activities was affected tremendously.

National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) and some officers for the Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) visited the scene to access the damage and also provide solutions so school activities can still continue on that day.
Here are significant strategies both citizens and the government can put in place to help avoid or even mitigate rainstorm disaster occurrence/ aftermath in the future
1. Enhanced Building Standards: Implementing stricter building codes that require all structures, especially schools and public buildings, to withstand severe weather conditions.
2. Community Shelter Plans: Designating and strengthening community shelters that can provide safe havens during storms.
3. Drainage Improvement Projects: Improving drainage systems in the community to prevent flooding, which often accompanies rainstorms and exacerbates their impact.

4. Regular Weather Updates and Education by Ghana Meteorological Agency: Providing reliable weather forecasts and informing the community on emergency preparedness and response strategies by the Ghana Meteorological Agency can go a long way to help
5. Afforestation Activities; it is essential for the community settlers and the government to Plant trees to reduce the speed of storm runoffs and enhance soil strength, which can help in reducing the impact of storms.
These strategies, if properly done, can significantly decrease the physical and economic damage caused by such natural disasters such a heavy downpour of rains and provide a safer, more resilient environment for the community people to thrive.
