The real damage was inflicted during the initial 45 minutes of the match, and Ghana struggled to recover, suffering their second loss during the October international window. Prior to this, the Black Stars had faced a 2-0 defeat against Mexico in North Carolina. Coach Chris Hughton had previously acknowledged their defensive frailties against Mexico and had vowed not to repeat those mistakes against the USA. However, their defensive performance on Tuesday night was even worse, and the USA capitalized on their shortcomings.

This loss signifies Ghana’s third consecutive defeat to the USA, following their initial victories in 2006 and 2010, both during the World Cup. The USA had their revenge at the 2014 World Cup and has maintained the upper hand in their encounters since then.
Hughton made alterations to the team that had faced defeat against Mexico, with Belgium-based goalkeeper Abdul Nurudeen replacing Lawrence Ati-Zigi in goal. Despite conceding four goals, Nurudeen was arguably Ghana’s standout player in the first half.
Players like Mohammed Kudus, Thomas Partey, Jordan Ayew, and Inaki Williams all featured in the game but were unable to make an impact against the USA. Williams, in particular, left the field in disappointment after 75 minutes, as his goal drought with the Ghanaian team extended to 11 games.
The Black Stars are scheduled to return to action in November with critical matches against Madagascar and Comoros as they commence their campaign in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. Subsequently, their focus will shift to the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament, scheduled to commence in January 2024. The four-time African champions have been drawn into a group alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique.
