Rev. Prof. Fred M. Amevenku Elected Moderator of EP Church

Rev. Prof. Fred M. Amevenku has been elected Moderator of the General Assembly of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana (EPCG), after securing 111 votes representing 72.55 per cent of the valid votes cast at the church’s 12th General Assembly.

The election was held on Saturday, August 15, 2026, as delegates gathered for the church’s 12th General Assembly.

Amevenku defeated Rev. Prof. Daniel Y. Bruce, who obtained 41 votes, representing 26.80 per cent of the valid votes.

One ballot was rejected, accounting for 0.65 per cent of the ballots accounted for.

The results supplied to GhanaEducation.org show that 153 ballots were accounted for, while 12 registered voters were absent. This means the total expected electorate was 165, producing a turnout of approximately 92.73 per cent.

With 152 valid votes cast, Amevenku’s 111 votes gave him a commanding margin of 70 votes over his closest contender.

Amevenku secures more than two-thirds of valid votes

The result represents a strong mandate for Rev. Prof. Amevenku, who secured more than seven out of every 10 valid votes cast.

The 12 absent voters were not included in the percentage calculation because they did not participate in the ballot.

The election marks a significant moment in the leadership history of the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, particularly as the church moves into a new leadership era following the tenure of Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. Bliss Divine Kofi Agbeko (Rtd).

A church with more than a century of history

The Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana, has its roots in the missionary work associated with the North German Mission in the former German Togoland. Following the political changes that divided Togoland after the First World War, the church developed across what became Ghana and Togo.

The World Council of Churches records that in May 1922, the first synod of the mission at Kpalime declared itself the supreme governing body of the Ewe Church and elected its first moderator.

The church has since developed into one of Ghana’s major historic Protestant denominations, with congregations and institutions playing important roles in Christian ministry, education and community development.

For many decades, the church’s highest governing body operated as a General Synod. The leadership structure was subsequently changed, and the church moved to the General Assembly system, with the Moderator serving as the overall leader of the denomination.

The change gave the office of Moderator of the General Assembly its present form. Historical records identify Rev. Francis Amenu as the first Moderator following the transition to the General Assembly system.

The five most recent Moderators in the church’s leadership history

A look at the recent history of the office provides useful context for Amevenku’s election.

1. Rt. Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. Bliss Divine Kofi Agbeko (Rtd)

2021–2026

Rev. Dr. Lt. Col. Bliss Divine Kofi Agbeko became the church’s 14th Moderator in January 2021 after being elected at the Ninth General Assembly.

He succeeded the late Rt. Rev. Seth Senyo Agidi, who died in October 2020 before completing his term. Agbeko subsequently became the substantive Moderator and was formally inducted at the Dela Cathedral in Ho.

Before becoming Moderator, Agbeko served as Deputy Director for Religious Affairs of the Ghana Armed Forces from 2016 to 2018 and had served as District Pastor of the Accra New Town branch of the EP Church.

At his induction, he outlined an agenda focused on discipline, transparency, financial sustainability, institutional development, human-resource capacity building and repositioning the church for what he described as a new era of post-modern ministry.

2. Rt. Rev. Seth Senyo Agidi

2015–2020

The late Rt. Rev. Seth Senyo Agidi became Moderator in 2015, succeeding Rev. Francis Amenu.

Agidi died on October 10, 2020, while still in office. Reports at the time noted that his administration had developed a five-year strategic plan aimed at giving the church greater focus and visibility. He had also continued efforts to expand the church’s presence beyond Ghana.

Following his death, Rev. Elisha Emmanuel Attu acted as Moderator for the remaining period before the induction of Agbeko.

3. Very Rev. Francis Amenu

2009–2015

Francis Amenu became the first Moderator of the General Assembly after the church moved away from the General Synod structure.

His election marked an important institutional transition in the church’s governance. He had previously served Ghanaian congregations in London and was involved in establishing the EP Church in the United Kingdom.

His six-year tenure ended in 2015, when he was succeeded by Seth Senyo Agidi.

4. Very Rev. Livingstone Komla Buama

2001–2009 — General Synod

Before the General Assembly era, the church was led through the General Synod system.

Livingstone Komla Buama was the final Moderator of the General Synod, serving from 2001 until 2009. Historical records list him among the church’s former Synod Moderators before the transition to the General Assembly structure.

This makes Buama particularly significant in the church’s history because he was the bridge between the old General Synod system and the modern General Assembly structure.

5. Very Rev. Japhet Ledo

1993–2001 — General Synod

Very Rev. Japhet Ledo served as Moderator from 1993 to 2001 under the General Synod system.

His name remains part of the church’s recent leadership history. He also featured prominently in the 2021 transition to Agbeko, when he jointly performed the induction ceremony for the new Moderator on behalf of the late Seth Agidi.

A new chapter for the EP Church

The election of Rev. Prof. Fred M. Amevenku therefore represents more than a change in personnel. It marks another chapter in the evolution of an institution whose leadership structure has developed from the historic General Synod system into the present General Assembly.

Amevenku takes over after a period in which the church was led by Agbeko, who succeeded Agidi following the latter’s death in office.

His decisive 111-vote victory gives him a strong electoral mandate as he prepares to lead the church into its next phase.

The 12th General Assembly, therefore, will be remembered not only for the election itself, but also for the beginning of a new leadership chapter for the Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Ghana.

Important historical note

The term “last five Moderators” requires a distinction: only Francis Amenu and Seth Senyo Agidi among the four immediately preceding leaders served under the modern General Assembly structure before Agbeko. Livingstone Komla Buama and Japhet Ledo served as Moderators of the earlier General Synod. Historical sources also identify Agbeko as the 14th Moderator of the church overall.
