Roadblock at Ewusiejo Causes Long Queues at Tarkwa and Takoradi Stations
Friday, October 27, 2023, was a challenging day for many commuters in the Tarkwa and Takoradi areas as long queues formed at the lorry stations because of the roadblock at Ewusiejo in the Ahanta West Municipality, which had persisted for the past four days.
Passengers eager to travel to Takoradi or Tarkwa found themselves stranded due to this unexpected roadblock. At both Tarkwa and Takoradi stations, there were lengthy queues of frustrated passengers, all waiting for their turn to purchase tickets and secure a ride on the next available vehicle.
The roadblock stemmed from an incident involving an Ivorian-bound cargo truck, which had encountered a heavy rut on the road at Ewusiejo, in the Ahanta West Municipal Assembly, and was unable to extricate itself from the predicament. The truck’s mechanical woes may have been exacerbated by repeated attempts to free it from the rut. Consequently, hundreds of vehicles on both sides of the road found themselves immobilized, leaving numerous passengers in a state of helplessness.
For those with pressing commitments, such as meetings and business engagements, alternative means of transport, like the use of okada (motorcycle taxis) or pragya (tricycles), became the only viable options for circumventing the traffic and reaching their destinations.
Nicholas Asante, a student at the University of Education, Winneba, expressed his frustrations to GhanaWeb, saying, “I have exams in Takoradi this weekend, so I wanted to go early to have ample time for study, but look at me now.”

Yaw Mensah, a driver heading to Takoradi, shared his ordeal, stating, “The cars are not coming because of the roadblock; all the drivers are stuck on the road. I, for instance, spent six hours on this road before reaching my destination, so until a solution is found, passengers will continue to be stranded.”
He added, “We are appealing to the Ghana Highway Authority and the government to address the deteriorating road conditions, as we are enduring a great deal of hardship.”
In response to the crisis, the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service, along with the National Road Safety Authority, deployed personnel to direct traffic and mitigate confusion on the road. At the site of the incident in Ewusiejo, graders and heavy road construction equipment have been mobilized, ready to act as soon as the cargo truck is removed, facilitating the repair of that portion of the road.
The incident underscores the importance of maintaining and improving the nation’s road infrastructure, ensuring smooth traffic flow and minimizing the impact of road-related disruptions on commuters and businesses.
