Running Mate Choices for John Mahama: Kofi Boakye Emerges as a Strong Contender
One key decision for NDC presidential candidate John Mahama is his choice of a running mate, and sources within the party’s headquarters suggest that Commissioner of Police (COP) Kofi Boakye (retired) is emerging as a strong contender for the role.
Kofi Boakye’s deep-rooted friendship with John Mahama is no secret, and his connection to the Ashanti Region, where he hails from, adds an interesting dimension to the speculation. Insiders reveal that his selection could be seen as an attempt to gain support from the Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Ashanti kingdom, as the NDC prepares for the 2024 election.
Despite Kofi Boakye’s prominence in the running mate discussions, he faces stiff competition from two other notable figures within the party. These contenders include Julius Debrah, the former Chief of Staff during Mahama’s previous administration, and Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyeman, who served as John Mahama’s running mate in the 2020 general election.

A notable point of discussion within the NDC is the impact of Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyeman’s selection as the running mate in the 2020 election. While she brought a wealth of experience, her choice did not translate into a victory for the NDC, particularly in the Central Region. This has led many party members to question whether her re-selection would significantly benefit the NDC’s chances in the upcoming 2024 elections.
Another key aspect being considered is the geographical origin of the running mate. There’s a growing argument within the NDC for selecting a running mate from the Eastern Region. With its diverse ethnic makeup and a significant portion of the population not traditionally aligned with the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Eastern Region is seen as a strategic choice. Some also suggest that the absence of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, who hails from the Eastern Region, on the ballot could make this selection even more appealing.
On the other hand, there is a strong faction within the NDC pushing for a candidate from the Ashanti Region. They believe that challenging the NPP’s stronghold in this region is a worthy endeavor and could be an effective electoral strategy, especially if the NPP doesn’t select a presidential candidate or running mate from the Ashanti Region.
As the NDC’s presidential candidate, John Mahama has an important decision to make, and the choice of a running mate will be a critical factor in the party’s quest to secure victory in the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections. The final selection, as well as the rationale behind it, will undoubtedly be closely scrutinized by political analysts and the public alike in the coming months.
