The Ga Mashie Traditional Area in Greater Accra is gearing up for the burial and final funeral rites of the late Ga Manye, Naa Dedei Omaedru III. In a recent announcement by the Ghana Education Service (GES), it has been confirmed that there will be no school closures during these solemn proceedings. This decision comes as a result of changes in the funeral program for Ga Manye, and the GES believes it will not disrupt academic activities.

The announcement was made through a statement signed by the Acting Director of Education, Greater Accra Region, Stephen Abamfo, which was addressed to all school heads and teachers in the region.

The GES and the Funeral Planning Committee have decided to shift the date for the closure of schools, shops, and offices in and around the Ga Mashie Traditional Area. The new date for these closures is now set for Saturday, October 28, 2023, instead of the previously scheduled Thursday, October 27, 2023.

Naa Dedei Omaedru III, the Ga Manye, passed away at the age of 88 in December 2022 at her residence in Dansoman. Her death marked the end of an era, and the Ga Traditional Council is committed to ensuring a peaceful and dignified farewell for the late queen mother. They have called upon the public to adhere to all the directives issued to facilitate the smooth execution of the burial and funeral rites.

This decision by the GES to keep schools open in the Ga Mashie area during this period reflects the importance of balancing cultural traditions and education. It ensures that students can continue their studies without any disruption while also respecting the significance of the Ga Manye’s burial. The Ga Mashie Traditional Area and its people are coming together to pay their respects to Naa Dedei Omaedru III, and the revised schedule allows for this tribute to be paid in a way that does not interfere with the region’s educational commitments.
