During the Second World War, British West African colonies, including the Gold Coast (present-day Ghana), played a crucial role by contributing raw materials and manpower to support the war effort. The Gold Coast alone enlisted approximately 70,000 men as Gold Coast Soldiers, comprising technical and service corps. Initially drawn from the martial peoples of the Northern Territories, recruitment expanded to include individuals from the Asante region and the south in mid-1940.
Formal Gold Coast Soldiers recruitment was primarily targeted at drivers and artisans, but a significant number of recruits were forcefully enlisted through official quotas imposed on districts and the influence of local chiefs. Despite strong opposition to the Gold Coast Soldiers enlistment, the British Army, facing the need for labor in its military efforts, compelled recruitment and even took the drastic measure of closing some gold mines in the Gold Coast.
