Concerns about rape and defilement in Ghana have gained attention again following the news of how 20 men allegedly gang-defiled a 13-year-old girl in Madina, a suburb of Greater Accra.
The sad incident took place in the Madina constituency, which is represented by Hon. Francis-Xavier Sosu as its Member of Parliament, who is also a lawyer and human rights activist.
The news of how 20 men allegedly gang-defiled the 13-year-old girl in Madina was made public by Human Rights Reporters Ghana (HRRG) and the Justice Revived Foundation (JRF). According to the two human rights advocacy NGOs, the victim of the barbaric act was a Primary 3 pupil of Madina No. 3 School.
The disturbing story has sent the Madina community, parents, and young girls in basic and senior high schools into a state of fear.
How the 20 Men Allegedly Gang-Defiled a 13-Year-Old Basic 3 Girl in Madina
The barbaric and atrocious crime allegedly began in February 2025. One of the key suspects, Clement Kwame, who lives close to the residence of the victim, Ama, around the Hannah School complex, allegedly lured the girl.
When the innocent girl fell into the evil trap of Clement Kwame, he allegedly had an affair with the minor, often without protection. On some occasions, he allegedly invited or informed other young men to have their way with Ama. In so doing, they allegedly defiled Ama on multiple occasions, often without protection and in a group setting, according to the press release by the HRRG and JRF.
The press release further revealed that “These perpetrators, some of whom are reportedly friends and colleagues of Clement Kwame, defiled Ama on multiple occasions, often without protection and in a group setting.”
In an attempt to prevent Ama from reporting the matter to her parents and family, she was allegedly threatened by Clement Kwame. These threats were aimed at silencing the innocent juvenile. “The chief perpetrator further compounded Ama’s suffering by threatening her life to silence her, preventing her from reporting the abuse and unlawful acts to her family or authorities,” the press release revealed.
According to preliminary but reliable information available to this portal from HRRG and JRF, persons suspected to be part of the illegality include Nico, Kassim, Englishman, Oluu, Taller, Uncle Kwasi, Uncle Kojo, Sweet Pola, D-Black, Ensor, Paa Kwesi, Thomas, Kwabena, Agya, and Kwaku, among others.
Ama, the vulnerable girl, is currently pregnant as a result of the alleged criminal acts. According to the human rights activists and the advocacy NGOs, Ama needs comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support to address her physical and emotional trauma, including her ongoing pregnancy.
Action Taken on the Matter
According to the two NGOs, “the case has been lodged with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), Madina branch, and we commend the police for arresting some of the perpetrators.” However, they have added that they are “gravely concerned that Clement Kwame and several others remain at large.”
What Needs to Be Done Now
The Ghana Education Service must take up this issue and be concerned since the child is a public school pupil per the information made public by HRRG and JRF.
Issues about rape, defilement, how such persons operate, the warning signs for the girl child and parents, the need to enlghten learners on such matters and help them must engage the attention of socieity, school authorities, parents and teachers while reminding young girls to remain decent, careful.
The HRRG and JRF have called for the following urgent action by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and DOVVSU, Madina:
- Expedite investigations with the utmost diligence and sensitivity, ensuring Ama and her family are treated with respect and compassion.
- Intensify efforts to apprehend Clement Kwame and all remaining perpetrators involved in this despicable crime.
- Ensure all offenders are prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, delivering justice for Ama and sending a clear message that such atrocities will not be tolerated.
- Provide Ama with comprehensive medical, psychological, and social support to address her physical and emotional trauma, including her ongoing pregnancy.
The HRRG and JRF furthered that they are “united in our commitment to ensuring justice for Ama and are working tirelessly to support her family, advocate for her rights, and amplify her voice.”

They added that “No child should endure such unimaginable violence, and no perpetrator should escape accountability. Every child’s welfare must be treated as paramount, as the law requires.”
The HRRG and JRF have also requested that Ghanaian authorities, civil society organizations, and the public join them in condemning this inhumane and criminal act and demanding swift justice. They further urged the government and relevant stakeholders to strengthen measures to protect vulnerable children, particularly girls, from sexual violence and exploitation by putting in place robust enforcement of existing laws, public awareness campaigns, and accessible support systems for survivors of sexual abuse.
